Hi everybody,

My name is Charlotte and I am coming to you with a desperate need. My fiancé is currently in the hospital incapacitated. He went to the ER at the end of March, had organ failure, was doing better for a few days, and then suddenly his heart stopped. He was down for 20 plus minutes and now has an unknown amount of brain damage.

He is currently trying to recover, and every day he gets a little bit better. If the story stopped there, I might be able to just work, try to be by his side every minute, and carry on.

Unfortunately, a few of his direct family think that I should just leave him there, not be in his life, and hand over everything he owns to them. They started trying to push me out 1-2 days after he became incapacitated and are now trying to get ahold of all of his stuff because they don’t think he will make it. My fiancé Nick is a very strong person and I know that he is trying his hardest to recover no matter what they think.

So now, I find myself in the situation that I have to take my future in-laws to court and get guardianship of him, just to protect his life from people who should be his family but are not acting like it.

It breaks my heart that I have to do any of this, and I have tried to work with them multiple times, but they have made it clear with many statements that they don’t think I should even stick around. I know in my heart that he will come back to us fully!

So please help me. I am a first-time college student who couldn’t attend college when I was younger because I had to help take care of my siblings. I have a job and am trying to do the best I can, but the attorney is going to cost a lot of money. I have already put down $7,000 off an emergency credit card, but that will not last. I am trying to get a second job so I can do what I can to cover the attorney fees and protect my fiancé from his family, but this will take time.
