Hello,
My name is Derrick and I have had an incredibly hard life. Growing up, I had a very bad home life including sexual and physical abuse, and because of it I now have PTSD. I have been living with this disorder for nearly 10 years, and in turn, it has made my life a daily struggle.
I was in my 4th year of studying Music Education at Western Michigan University and was preparing to take my Teaching Methods courses, the only requirements left to receive my degree. During this time, I was working part time to pay for my rent and other expenses.
My mother, who is the main source of my PTSD, was supposed to help pay for my schooling. She had taken out a loan to pay for my tuition, but instead of using it for that purpose, she used it to buy whatever she wanted.
She then waited to tell me this until the end of the semester, when I was already accruing late fees and account holds from my college. Being told to figure it out on my own, I panicked.
I eventually had to quit my schooling and start working full time to pay for the fees and interest on the loan, as well as my existing college tuition bills and daily living expenses.
Over time this debt has continued to grow in interest, and I cannot seem to make enough to pay it off. The amount is just too big for me to handle. It has destroyed my credit and is preventing me from going back to school and finishing my degree. I currently make enough money to pay for my living expenses, but that is all.
With your help, I can finally begin to pay off this debt. I can finally go back to school and finish my Music Education degree. I can finally become the Band Director I've always wanted to be and begin to move forward in my life.
I have removed my mother from my life and have begun therapy to improve my mental health. I have also started my own small business called DGBrass, where I teach, perform, and write music.
With my degree I will be able to further help students learn through music and be the role model that they deserve. Being that I didn't have anyone to look up to growing up, there was no way for me find help and prevent my situation from happening. I want to be that person for my students. Someone who will always be there for them. Someone who will be that guide for them and their future.
This has been my goal since I was 10 years old. Please, help me with my cause. Help me put this part of my life behind me. Thank you.
Derrick
I would love to tell my story to anyone who would be interested in hearing it.
