Giving Pack

In 2015, the National Assessment of Educational Progress reported that 93 percent of eighth graders in the Detroit Public School district were not proficient in reading while 96 percent were not proficient in math. Although DPS is beginning to improve, a lack of adequate school supplies often leads to a student’s inability to fully capitalize on their education—this is what prompted the creation of Giving Pack.

Giving Pack is an organization based in Grosse Pointe and East Lansing that fosters volunteerism and contributes to community success by providing supplies and resources to those in need. Using a community-to-community approach, Giving Pack collaborates with schools, churches, and small businesses to collect supplies to create individualized relief packs. These packs are then sent to various communities and organizations, such as the DPS.

We have recently started planning our first annual Backpack Drive in which we will be filling and sending backpacks of school supplies to DPS elementary schools. Funds collected through this GoFundMe will be used to purchase backpacks and collection bins so Giving Pack can begin organizing supply drives within the Grosse Pointe and East Lansing communities.
