I am Jeff Cockrum, an openly gay man in a small Texas town, reaching out to you in a time of dire need. On January 9th, I found myself facing a life-threatening situation rooted in homophobia, and now I am embroiled in a legal battle to defend my right to self-defense.

It was a regular day until I became the target of a homophobic slur. This hateful encounter escalated when the aggressor attempted to hit me with his car. Fearing for my life and with no escape route, I had to draw my weapon in self-defense, a decision made as a last resort. I immediately called 911 to report the situation while keeping the individual at gunpoint. After ensuring he was no longer a threat, I secured my weapon and waited for the police.

Despite acting in self-defense and in accordance with Texas's constitutional carry and stand your ground laws, I found myself arrested and wrongfully labeled as the aggressor. The police failed to fully consider the series of actions that led me to defend myself, putting me in the position I am now. This incident not only jeopardizes my personal safety but challenges the very essence of our right to protect ourselves from harm.

I moved to a small town to care for my father, who was diagnosed with COPD, and now I face an uphill legal battle. I have found an attorney who specializes in criminal defence and is willing to help, but the costs associated is a substantial financial burden.
