I am currently facing an obstacle that requires the assistance of great people such as yourself. My name is Shawn Giovanni Wiggins and I became of the student body in 2012. I am originally from Liberty City, Dade County, Florida. At age 17 I made the decision to serve my country as a combat medic in the United States Army for 6.5 years. Upon completion of my enlistment, I made the decision to pursue my dreams through education. After arriving at The University of Georgia, I totally ingratiated myself in the university community. I have served as the president of the NAACP, SGA Senator, and a two-time member of the All Campus Allocation committee. My passion to help others has driven me to pursue a law degree with a joint degree or masters in public policy/public administration. After receiving said degrees, I plan to pursue a career in international law or government affairs.
Unfortunately my plans to pursue this life plan were stifled by a series of events beyond my control. After my mother suffered a non-fatal heart attack, my mind was focused on her recovery, not my student account. I was disheartened to learn that a scholarship I earned, that would have helped me pay for housing, was never gifted and I was soon without housing. My student account had soon grown beyond my ability to repay, delaying my graduation from May 2014 to the current. I have 16 credit hours to the completion of my degree. Thankfully, Brother Travis Martin informed me of a student emergency fund run by UGA's Student's Affairs office could help me pay off my accrued debt of $5,200. Being a completely independent student, I worked (and still work) two jobs to pay off $1,400 of my student account bill. Although I have been hardest hit, Alpha has reinforced in me that "It's when things seem worst that you must not quit." I have worked hard to reduce my debt to $3,300 and I need your help to bring my balance to zero. I have saved $700 to immediately contribute but I am humbly asking brothers to make contributions that could help me reach the outstanding balance of $1,600.
