On December 16, life for the Penelope Martinez and her parents was turned upside down.
Crossing the street after school, Penny, a sixth grader at Grant Middle School, was struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk. The resulting injuries were so severe that doctors decided the best course of action was to send her to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston for emergency surgery and treatment.
Penny and her mom were flown from Corpus Christi to Houston on an emergency plane and her father gathered a few items and drove to Houston.
She required multiple surgeries to fix a broken leg, shattered pelvis and several bones in her hand, while also suffering a fracture in her skull and facial bones along with a broken clavicle.
Penny’s stay in Houston lasted an entire month throughout the holiday season, including several weeks in inpatient rehab when she began the lengthy road to recovery, with her parents at her bedside throughout, re-learning how to do the most basic of daily tasks, including walking.
She is now back in Corpus Christi, back in school, continuing her rehabilitation, while still returning monthly for follow-up visits in Houston, incurring more costs and medical bills for her family.
We are looking for help for Penny and her parents, so they won’t have to worry about finances and can 100% work on her recovery.
Please consider donating and sharing their story as the family would greatly appreciate any help you can provide.
Any contribution, no matter the size, will go a long way toward helping support Penny and her family and allow them to focus on their healing and rehabilitation.
Thank you for your continued thoughts, prayers, support and positive messages that have helped Penny and her parents through the hardest challenge of their lives. Together we can all help them get through this traumatic event.
