Nick Kondochriste's sisters, Faith, Cathy & Kim are reaching out for help for their loving brother. Nick suffered two devastating strokes at the onset of Covid in Feb 2020 and underwent two emergency brain surgeries at the Lahey Hospital in Burlington, Massachusetts. Nick was left paralyzed on his right side and was diagnosed with aphasia, which limits his speech.
Nick spent several months at Lahey Hospital and then was sent to a step-down hospital. Due to insurance limitations, we were forced to move Nick to a nursing facility. Over time we realized this nursing home was dramatically understaffed and did not provide rehabilitation services for stroke victims. Nick spent all of 2021 with no physical therapy, limited speech therapy, and limited to no dental and feeding care which resulted in a diet of pureed food only. At one point, the staff told us they never spoke to Nick because they thought he was not able to speak! If only they had taken the time! This was terrifying to us! Our hearts broke and the tears never ended. It was at this point we decided the best thing for Nick was to bring him home!
Finally, after months of hard work, with everyone's prayers and God's intervention, we have been blessed and Nick is home!
Since his return home, we have been humbled by the amount of care required along with the outstanding financial hardships Nick faces. With the love and support of her family, Kim has relocated to MA to care for Nick at home. We have found that due to Nick not having a pension and exhausting all of his savings on medical bills, he is in critical need of financial support. As a result of his long time in the nursing home, his home requires many repairs. Beyond the many changes at his home that were provided by Medicaid and close friends, he is now in need of a new furnace. Although personal care attendants, medications, therapists, and transportation to and from medical appointments are provided by his insurance, too few care providers and driver attendants are applying to the job postings. Wheelechair transfer services and ambulances are understaffed and have left us waiting 6-8 hours for them to take Nick home after a doctor's appointment, which is exhausting for Nick. Therefore, we are searching for a wheelchair van in order to go to medical appointments and travel needs. These are a few of the priorities and concerns we are hoping to resolve.
Many of you have asked, "What can we do for Nick?". We know you meant it and are now reaching out for help to meet these critical needs to keep him home and continue making gains to be the best possible version of himself!
We graciously ask you now! Please consider helping in any way possible. We understand that times are difficult for all, so we can only pray for your support for Nick.
Should you know of any non-profit groups, philanthropists and /or organizations wh may be able to offer support, please reach out to us. Additionally if you know of any PCAs in the Kingston area, please mention to them that Nick needs help.
Nick's friends have been there for him from Day One and he considers all of his friend's family! We will never get over how many of you from all over the country call , visit , and send well wishes. Due to your caring and friendship, Nick has never felt forgotten.
Please, we ask that you please share this with all your friends, on your social media, with businesses, or anyone who might assist us in this quest for this great guy who has done so much for so many others.
.
We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
With much love and affection, Nick, Faith, Cathy & Kim
May God Bless you all with good health.
