NHS nurse takes on 200km kick scooter challenge to raise money for dad’s cancer treatment.
Hi everyone! My name is April. I’m an NHS nurse living in the UK and on the 24th of September, I will be embarking on The C2C (Coast to Coast) Challenge from Workington, Cumbria to Tynemouth, Newcastle (the width of England) on a kick scooter to raise money for my dad’s cancer treatment in the Philippines. And no, the scooter’s not electric!
My dad is diagnosed with an aggressive form of Stage 4 Colon Cancer spreading into his liver back in the New Year of 2019. Since then, he has survived 3 major surgeries, endless chemotherapies, ITU admissions and is now left with half a liver. I have not seen him in all this time as he is in the Philippines.
The beginning of 2022 felt like an answered prayer when he didn’t need to have chemo for a bit and he was just getting his strength back. But just the other week we found out there is a new tumour in his liver again, right next to a major artery.
Because of his delicate state, the new treatments he need requires him to fly to Manila which is over 900 miles from any of our loved ones.
As a family, we have exhausted all our life savings and taken every loan we can to get him to where his is now, and we are at a point where the cost of treatment is exceeding our income.
If we cannot pay for his next chemo or his next treatment, he will not live long.
Next year he will be turning 60. An unimaginable age three years ago, now so close to being a reality. We truly see every day as a blessing and the idea of celebrating dad’s birthday as a family gives us the strength to fight on.
