Prayers for Braelynn

We are the Herremans Family and what I mean by family is that we are the mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, aunts and uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, extended family and countless friends asking for your support for our family member.  Braelynn Watts, our sweet 4 year old princess, woke up on the morning of Saturday, August 11th, in excruciating pain, yelling and running into her mommy's room.  Emily, working in the medical profession, did a quick assessment and noticed swelling and redness on her neck, face and back.  It appeared to be a skin rash, but unbeknownst to her at that time, it was so much more.  After giving Braelynn Tylenol and ibuprofen alternatingly and benedryl for the swelling throughout the day and evening, Braelynn still had no relief.  By early Sunday morning, Braelynn awoke again in agony and pain. Only this time the skin on her face was literally peeling off.  Her eyes, nose, and cheeks were incredibly red and swollen and at every touch of her skin, the rash would breakout, blister, and more skin would flake off.  Emily immediately got in the car with Braelynn and headed to the Gainesville Hospital Emergency Room. Doctors there decided it was beyond their scope of care and reached out to Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta via SKYPE.  They pre-diagnosed her with SSSS (Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome) and requested that Braelynn be transported by ambulance.

SSSS is an illness that is characterized by red blistering skin that looks like a burn or scald and is caused by the release of two exfoliative toxins from the bacteria known as Staphylococcus aureus.

You can only imagine the pain this precious little girl is enduring.  Can you imagine as a mother not being able to hold your child or even give her a kiss because every touch, every movement of her body, causes pain that no adult could bare, let alone a child?  After being admitted to a room, an IV was placed to allow for morphine and 2 rounds of antibiotics to be administered.  Nothing seemed to relieve her pain nor were her symptoms getting any better. In fact, they were getting worse.  Doctors were concerned that Braelynn might need a feeding tube because she was not eating or drinking anything, possibly because the infection had spread to her throat.  Thankfully, this was not the case.  After further testing, not only does Braelynn have Staph throughout her entire body, she also has a strep infection along with the redness, swelling and burning in the strep affected areas as well.  Cultures were obtained because she is still not responding to the antibiotics.  And so now we all wait and we all pray.  We pray for healing and we pray for strength.

During this time Emily has not left her daughter's side, nor has Gary, Braelynn's dad and Emily's husband.  Emily’s place of work has graciously continued to pay her even though she has no vacation remaining due to a recent auto accident.   Your donations of any amount will not only be greatly appreciated, but it will go towards daily meals for both Emily and Gary, gas for traveling to and from Atlanta (which is about 80 miles one way), and any immediate bills that need to be paid.

God speed recovery for Brealynn and again our many thanks, love, and friendship to all for your thoughts and prayers and continued support for our family.
