Araceli was a child who all her life fought for the right to live with her mother in a place free from violence. She was born in Honduras in May 2013 but when she was only a baby her mother, Jenny, fled the country to save her own life, migrating to the United States. Araceli remained under the care of her maternal grandmother and was forced to live separated from her mother for more than six years. Finally, in May 2021, after crossing many borders and living as a refugee in Mexico for almost 2 years, she was reunited with Jenny in California.

 

Araceli loved to dance, swim, ride her bike, and spend time outside. She loved to learn new things and get to know new places. During her life she shared with all who knew and cared for her her happiness, her resilience, and her amazing strength and ability to persist even under the hardest of circumstances.

 

Tragically, in early November 2021, Araceli’s life was cut short by an accident resulting from one of many types of violence that plague the lives of migrant girls and refugees. Now Jenny, a single mother to her youngest daughter, only 2 years old, are confronted with serious difficulties as they the face the road ahead. They have no home and Jenny has lost her job. They need help. Both will need a lot of assistance and support going forward, in both the short- and mid-term. The money raised through this campaign will be used for Jenny and her daughter's basic needs such as food and housing, as well as for legal fees and Araceli's funeral and burial services.

 

Undoubtedly the best moments of Araceli’s life were when the people around her joined together to care and provide for her, despite not knowing her personally. Let’s now do this for her mother and sister, who have lost what was most precious to them.

 

 

Araceli fue una niña que toda su vida luchó por el derecho a vivir con su madre en un lugar sin violencia. Nació en Honduras en mayo de 2013 pero cuando era apenas una bebé, su madre, Jenny, tuvo que huir del país para salvar su vida y migrar a los Estados Unidos. Araceli se quedó al cuidado de su abuela materna y vivió separada de su madre por más de seis años. Finalmente, en mayo de 2021, después de atravesar varias fronteras y vivir refugiada en México por cerca de dos años, Araceli pudo finalmente reunirse con Jenny en California.

 

Una de las cosas que Araceli más disfrutaba era bailar, nadar, andar en bicicleta y pasear en los parques y en la naturaleza. Le encantaba aprender cosas nuevas y conocer lugares nuevos. Durante su vida compartió su alegría, su resiliencia y su enorme fuerza para seguir adelante con todas las personas que la conocimos y la cuidamos durante su largo viaje.

 

Desgraciadamente, a inicios de noviembre de 2021, la vida de Araceli fue interrumpida por un accidente acontecido como consecuencia de las múltiples violencias que asedian la frágil vida de las niñas migrantes y refugiadas. Después de esta tragedia, Jenny, quien es madre soltera y su hija más pequeña, de 2 años, están enfrentando serias dificultades para seguir adelante y requieren apoyo para enfrentar los que sigue. Se han quedado sin hogar y Jenny perdió su empleo. En el corto y mediano plazo ambas necesitan de mucha ayuda solidaria. La ayuda generada por esta campaña será utilizada para cubrir las necesidades básicas de Jenny y su hija como comida y renta, honorarios legales y para los servicios funerarios de Araceli. 

 

Si algo es seguro, es que los mejores momentos de la vida de Araceli fueron cuando las personas a su alrededor nos unimos para cuidar de ella y proveerla de lo más importante, aún si no la conocíamos. Hagamos eso por su madre y su hermana ahora, que han perdido lo más importante.
