Me presento, Soy Marisol Dominguez Orantes, 35 Años, nacida y criada en Nogales Sonora, soy Medica Veterinaria Zootecnista, Escritora y amante del mar, mi área es Mamíferos marinos y salud pública. Soy parte del Equipo de Investigadores Asociados de ORCA, ONG que se encuentra en San Bartolo, Peru. Tengo la gran oportunidad de presentar mi poster en el 26th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals 17 -23 de octubre del 2026 en San Juan Puerto Rico . El trabajo que sometimos y fue aceptado es sobre Brucella y su presencia en Pinnípedos (Lobos Marinos, etc.) en Mexico y Peru. Se sabe que Brucella es una zoonosis altamente contagiosa a nivel cosmopolita, estudiar esta zoonosis, obtenemos respuestas para observar y analizar qué tan equilibrado esta un ecosistema, en este caso ecosistema marino. Recordemos que, si hay un desequilibrio, los primeros en avisarnos son los mamíferos marinos. Sobre todo, porque también puede y llega a afectar al ser humano.
La ciencia aporta sabiduría, y con nuestros conocimientos, podemos crear protocolos de emergencia y analizar la epidemiologia de una población tanto marina como de seres humanos. Por lo tanto, seguir investigando enfermedades zoonóticas en mamíferos marinos es muy importante. No se habla mucho de salud pública y si se habla se mantiene bajo rango, cuando debería ser lo contrario, sobre todo después de la pandemia COVID cuando se sabe que las investigaciones son bastante importantes. Las interacciones entre el ser humano y los animales como en comunidades pequeñas, costeras y pesqueras es de vital importancia los monitoreos del estado de salud en el que se encuentran los mamíferos marinos, cabe recalcar, que en zonas de ecoturismo estos monitoreos de salud pública son de alta importancia.

Let me introduce myself: I am Marisol Dominguez Orantes, 35 years old, born and raised in Nogales, Sonora. I am a veterinary zootechnician, writer, and lover of the sea; my areas of expertise are marine mammals and public health. I am part of the team of associate researchers at ORCA, an NGO based in San Bartolo, Peru. I have the great opportunity to present my poster at the 26th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals, October 17–23, 2026, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The paper we submitted and had accepted is on Brucella and its presence in pinnipeds (sea lions, etc.) in Mexico and Peru. Brucella is known to be a highly contagious zoonosis on a global scale. By studying this zoonosis, we gain insights to observe and analyze how balanced an ecosystem is—in this case, a marine ecosystem. Let us remember that, if there is an imbalance, marine mammals are the first to alert us. Above all, because it can also affect humans.
Science provides insight, and with our knowledge, we can create emergency protocols and analyze the epidemiology of both marine and human populations. Therefore, continuing to research zoonotic diseases in marine mammals is very important. Public health is not discussed much, and when it is, it is given low priority, when it should be the opposite, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, when we know that research is quite important. The interactions between humans Given the importance of marine mammals both to wildlife and to small coastal and fishing communities, monitoring their health status is of vital importance. It should be emphasized that in ecotourism areas, these public health monitoring efforts are of the utmost importance.
