Greta's Long Journey Ahead
Donation protected
On October 27th, 2023 around 11:30pm my family's lives were changed forever. My sister, Greta, was struck while riding home from the movies with a friend, head on by a drunk driver who had crossed the median to their side of the road with no headlights. Greta was the only survivor. Her friend was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the other vehicle passed away shortly after reaching the hospital. Greta's initial findings were multiple brain bleeds found on the right frontal and left intracranial, a broken humorous, multiple broken ribs, and multiple lung contusions. The bleeds were soon stabilized, but there were still no responses from Greta outside of posturing... After 3 days there was an MRI to look deeper and we were informed of findings of DAI (Diffuse Axonal Injury) Grade 2 (white matter of Corpus Callosum). This took the breathe right out of us because in the next few days we would have no idea what to plan for, a funeral or a chance of recovery...
We are now on day 17, and by the help of fantastic medical teams, prayer, and quite frankly a miracle, we have the chance to go down that road to recovery! Greta is making small improvements each day with her breathing, tracking, and even some speech. Her right side extremities are moving against gravity and we will be going forward to neurological rehabilitation soon! It is going to be a very long road ahead still.
The rehabilitation center she will be attending is in Jacksonville, Florida which is 3 1/2 hours away from Mom and Dad's home, and about 6 hours from my home in Georgia. None of us could have possibly financially prepared for a journey like this. With mom being a school teacher and dad being a supervising foreman, their employers have been phenomenal in helping, however this won't touch the expenses to come. Her rehabilitation process will require family participation 24/7 which will require travel, lodging, and food expenses for possibly a year or more. To enter the doors of the rehab facility that she requires alone is $60,000…
If you are in a position to help in any financial way possible, big or small, to alleviate some of these stressors from the family, it would be so very much appreciated. And if you are unable in that way, please help to share Greta's story and keep up the continued influx of prayers which have gotten us to this point!!
