In 1980 while working as a corpsman in the US Navy at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center, I was assigned to the coronary care unit (CCU). An Admirial was in the CCU for chest pain. He had a cardiac arrest and the staff on duty began CPR, intubated him, and gave him several ampules of various medications directly into his heart. I jumped onto the bed to perform chest compressions and got stuck with a dirty needle. And so it began, first diagnosed as Non-A , Non - B hepatitis. I followed the issue for years with multiple liver biopsies and the result was that the virus was inactive. For 32 years the virus laid dormate,. Then in 2012 the virus, now known as Hepatitus C+ , began aggressively attacking my liver. The side effects of the virus are severe. When the liver tissue dies and becomes necrotic, blood no longer flows normally through the liver to be filtered. There is a backup of blood which increases the pressure in the portal vein system. The portal veins carry the blood from the major organs in your abdomen, back toward the heart. When the pressure in the portal veins rises it can impact the proper function of those organs. Another concern is that the lining of the portal veins may become thin and an aneurysm may form. A rupture of an aneurysm is critical and life threatening. The liver is the filter of the body. In my case, the liver is unable to clean the blood of many by-products secondary to digestion or muscle fatigue. Lactic acid builds in muscles with heavy activity followed by severe cramping. One of the more serious problems is that my liver can not process and remove ammonia from my blood. Ammonia is one of the waste products of digestion. Some foods yield higher levels of ammonia during digestion than others. Increased levels of ammonia can lead to encephalopathy which affects memory and can present with stroke like symptoms. In December 2014 I was admitted to the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) with some advanced signs and symptoms of encephalopathy. After several days in the hospital, a modified diet, and a number of various medications, I became more stable. In May 2015 I started a 12 week course of Harvoni boasting a 96-99% cure rate. After the 12 weeks, not only did the Harvoni not erraticate the Hep C+, my viral count almost doubled. My Doctor, the Head of Hepatology at MCV, is working on a new drug program to eradicate the Hep C+. I will still need a transplant to remove a significant portion of my liver which is necrotic, and implant a portion from a very generous tissue donor.
I need to find a living donor to offer one of the three liver lobes to save my life. I also need your financial support. Please help anyway you can. Every dollar makes a significant difference! Thank you for taking a few moments to learn more about Hep C+ and the important role you may have in changing my life.
Bottom line No Donor ; I Die!

Money raised will through this webpage The Go Fund
Me proceeds will be used:
1) Make the donor whole so the donor has NO out of pocket expenses from the procedure nor time away from work.
2) If any funds remain after covering the donor's expenses the remaining funds will be used to cover my expenses from the transplant surgery and recovery.
3) lf the total funds raised exceed the needs of 1) and 2), any balance remaining will be used to fund the Liver Foundation at VCU!
