A Dying Wish
Donation protected
After graduating a year early from high school, completing cosmetology school and six months of college, Genesis Nya Hassan-Gates came home from St. Augustine University in Raleigh for the summer feeling ill. She was diagnosed with leukemia in 2021.
Since then, Genesis has been in and out of the hospital, undergone several treatments and withstood constant pain. Despite she and her family’s valiant efforts, this bright, beautiful young soul’s life is being cut short in its prime.
On June 22, 2022, Genesis and her family were told that she had as little as two months to live at 20 years old. Obviously, the family is hoping for the most time they can have with her.
They say, when it rains, it pours. Despite Genesis’ diagnosis in 2021, she worked and saved enough money to buy her own car! This car has been a blessing to her family, given her 18-yr old brother has been able to take Genesis back and forth to the hospital, take their younger siblings to babysitters and run errands as needed. To add insult to injury, Genesis’ car was involved in a hit and run accident a few weeks ago which totaled it leaving her 6-member family with only one vehicle.
With Genesis gone, having been her mom’s right hand most of her life in helping with her siblings, her mom will need to move to be closer to a support system of relatives. Therefore, after Genesis is laid to rest, the family will be up for a big move.
This week, when asked by a palliative care nurse what her dying wish would be, Genesis asked for a big sleepover with her four siblings (ages 18, 13, 8 and 4) and to spend time near the water with her family and closest friends. That’s exactly what her mother, Tiffany and grandmother, Jacqui intend to do for her. Genesis’ family would like to make this simple dream a reality by planning a trip to nearby Lake Norman in North Carolina.
With your help, this family suffering through this ordeal can remove financial strain as one of their stressors and celebrate Genesis according to her wish as she lives out her all-too-short days on this earth. We’re hoping to raise $46,000-$48,000 as quickly as possible to cover the below items:
- Family Gathering at Lake Norman + Nurse - $5K
- Funeral/Burial - $25K
- Replacement car - $6K - $8K
- Moving Expenses for Genesis’ family - $10K
Anything you can contribute would be helpful.
