Calling in the Cavalry

Donation protected
As most of you already know, everyone’s favorite friend, Debbie Ruggiero suffered a terrible fall last week and fractured both her right and left femurs simultaneously.  Over the next 6-8 weeks, both her legs must be maintained in leg immobilizers so that her fractures can heal to the best of their ability.  This treatment plan was the best option to avoid surgery and anesthesia, which can be dangerous for someone with ALS to endure.

Debbie came home from the hospital on Sunday after several days of observation and pain management. She maintains her positive spirit, strong faith and her beautiful smile.  The way in which she chooses to live her life in the face of such hardships remains an awe-inspiring example to everyone who loves her.  What’s even more inspiring is watching her husband Jimmy, mother Rose, and daughter Dana continue to provide her all their love and the best care in the world.

As usual, there has been an overwhelming outpouring of support from family, friends and the community asking what can be done to help Debbie and the family during this challenging setback.  Debbie and her family are so appreciative of this and because of their pride would never ask for anything but your continued prayers.

Everyone has said they want to help beyond prayers, which is why her many friends are not too proud to call in the cavalry once again for Debbie.  The situation is that, despite full medical coverage, the nursing care benefit is minimal, providing just one hour a day, three days a week, and will exhaust after two short weeks, just one week from now.  Several nurse friends have teamed together and are coordinating schedules in order to assist Jimmy as her care now requires two people in order to keep her safely in position.  They have an appeal in with their insurance company and are reaching out to social workers and advocates, but in the meantime, we need to make sure Debbie gets the help she needs NOW in the form of proper nursing attention for the next eight weeks and hopefully beyond so she stays as healthy as possible.

We know that 2020 has been a challenging year across the world for so many families and we hesitated to initiate this at all, but then we remembered what Debbie means to all of us and we knew we had to do it anyway.  For those not in a position this time around, we understand and want you to know you remain just as much a part of her team as anyone else.

Everyone keep the prayers coming!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
