As most of you might already know, our family was involved in a severe car accident last weekend. I’ve been reluctant to post about it, as we were overwhelmed and uncertain how to navigate through this difficult situation.

It’s been a rough week on our family.

Last Friday our family took a routine day trip to Fargo, to watch football, support our son Anthony, and cheer on the Bismarck Demons as they played in the semifinal game.

After the game, we headed home. It was freezing cold out and the roads were bad. It all happened so fast, we hit black ice, lost control of the vehicle and rolled twice over. All airbags were deployed, and all windows were smashed on impact. The amount of smoke that rolled in from the engine made me think the whole vehicle was going to start on fire. Our vehicle was completely totaled out!

For that first few minutes after the crash, I was completely disoriented. I panicked and immediately yelled out my kids names; I could not see them or hear them. I didn’t know if they were unconscious, or thrown from the vehicle; I feared the worst when they didn’t answer. That split second of uncertainty, felt like forever, my heart sank in agony and detrimental fear for my babies lives. Then they finally yelled back

“I’m okay”.

We had to sift through broken glass and wreckage to get my kids out of the vehicle to safety. Everything was scattered everywhere, so I had to look for their shoes and jackets. Luckily we had blankets in the vehicle, so they weren’t freezing. I really tried to keep it together and do everything right in an emergency situation. Of course my phone was smashed and had only 5% battery, just enough to get word out to family, and contact authorities.

Our youngest son Windyn was physically unharmed, not a single scratch. Our daughter Cooper was in a lot of pain, so she was taken by ambulance, as a precautionary measure. Only minor cuts, bumps and bruises. Everyone was able to walk away without any serious injuries.

The following day, we went to the sheriffs department, to retrieve my daughter’s phone and personal belongings. The officer that helped us, had been to the accident site and seen our totaled vehicle, said:

“I can’t believe anyone survived that”

It was that bad!!

We lived through a real life nightmare, and every parents worst fear. This has been a traumatizing experience for everyone, especially Windyn and Cooper. But as bad as our car accident was, realistically, it could have been a hell of a lot worse. Saying that we are lucky to be alive is an understatement! We are blessed, blessed to be alive, and blessed to still have our kids here, on earth with us!! I have always told my kids how much they are loved, prayed for and divinely protected. By Gods Grace.
