Get us to Plains, Montana
Donation protected
My name is Thomas McKenna and I'm the head football coach at Rosemont HS in Sacramento, California. We are raising money to pay for a team trip to Plains, Montana. Typically trips with football teams are football related. However, this trip is not. We've been offered an opportunity (by Capital Christian Church in Sacramento) to go to Plains to help an impoverished town with their daily struggles. My team, during our stay, will split, deliver and stack cords of wood for the residents of Plains. They will work at the food bank and clothing bank helping pack/deliver food and clothing to those in need and any other way we can help for the week.
As a coach, I have the unique ability and responsibility to transition boys into men. Many of my boys come from fragmented families. Many of them come from homes without a positive male role model. This is where my staff and I come in. We become the father, brother and teacher for these kids for 4 pivotal years. I don't care if we win or lose as much as I care that my boys leave better people than when they started. Part of my philosophy for coaching is using the game of football to prepare boys to take on challenges in life. In a football game, a player face adversity every play. They have to make one of two decisions when playing. They can fight through the adversity or let the adversity overtake them. Many of my boys have the same daily struggles as those we're planning to help. These kids fight through that adversity daily the best they can. We're hoping that by exposing them to people that may be in a worse situation than them will inspire them to achieve important life goals.
The money we raise is to help offset the cost of transportation. The church has graciously absorbed the cost of food and lodging during our stay in Plains. The cost to get 40 plus kids and staff to Plains and back is around $5000.00. This trip is planned for the middle of July (18th-24th) of 2016 so we have plenty of time to fundraise.
I was recently looking at famous quotes and one by Frederick Douglass really caught my attention,
"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men."
and were trying to do at Rosemont. I want my boys to become strong men with stronger character. This trip is more about teaching basic humanitarian ideals like empathy, humility, and that we can make a difference in peoples lives by simply helping. It also helps us as a football team by applying sports principles like teamwork, communication and trust. I would greatly appreciate any donation to help my squad participate in such an event. I really believe this trip will inspire and shape these kids for future endeavors. I really believe that everyone that donates to this account is responsible for shaping and turn my boys lives around.
Thank You,
Thomas McKenna
