Dan had his e-bike stolen out of the bike locker inside his building. He doesn't have a car in SF so that bike was how he got around. He put 100s of miles exploring every corner of the city on it. He loved that bike probably more than everything else he has!

A series of back-to-back hardships that Dan has experienced will make it difficult for to him replace this right now. Together we can help get Dan back on his pedals.


The Loss

I was talking to Dan on the phone at 10:53AM on Wednesday June 25 when he said, "That looks similar to my bike." He noticed a person walking out the front door of his building with a familiar-looking bike. He checked the bike locker, realized that his bike was stolen, and then ran out onto the streets but the thief was already gone. 

Throughout the day I talked to Dan a number of times. He called the police and provided all of the details he could. He reviewed security footage with the building manager and discovered the picture above. This is a perfectly clear picture of the thief with an identifiable scorpion tattoo. Dan searched the streets, talking to every local he could find. I talked to Dan again that night. He said he was exhausted and had come up short. 

The entire next day Dan continued the search but came up short again. Each time I talked to him I could tell he was becoming more and more discouraged.

Righting the Wrong

Dan doesn't deserve this. He is the most kind and caring person I know. He would give you his last dollar if you hinted at needing anything. I know there are lots of people that feel the same way about Dan which is why I am hoping we can come together and surprise him with a replacement bike.

The Ask

Dan's bike was a Haibike Sduro Trekking bike which goes for around $2600. I would like to ask for a $50-100 donation by Tuesday next week (June 30). to a bike fund for Dan. Feel free to contribute more or less depending on your situation. Any contribution that you can afford will help and will make it more special for Dan. 

$2600 is a lot for a bike but this is essentially Dan's commuting vehicle during the week and his method for getting around on the weekends. I am confident that Dan will get every dollar of value out of it through utility and enjoyment.


I think that if we can rally 20-30 people, together we can meet this goal and surprise Dan with a bike that he will love even more than his last bike.  I was also thinking that we could all sign the bike, like writing on someones cast, to make it even more fun for him.

Does Dan's renter's insurance cover this?

Unfortunately not. Dan tried hard to insure this bike because he was aware of the problems in the city. The renter's insurance denied him coverage because they claimed that it had a motor and that he would have to get motorcycle coverage. He followed up with a motorcycle insurance company who claimed that they could not insure it because it didn't have a license plate.
