Raising funds to build a church for Mekane Selam

Mekane Selam Kidist Lideta LeMariam We’Kidus Gebriel Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, Melbourne, Australia  was established in 2016 in the hope to bring all the Ethiopian faithful based in Melbourne together under one roof and pass on the wisdom to the future generation.

There are two Tabots within this Church, Kidest Lideta Le’Mariam and Kidus Gabriel, annual celebrations being Ginbot 1; Tahisas 19 & Hamle 19; Kidus Gebriel (Ethiopian Calendar).

The church received its blessing from Abune Henock Archbishop to Australia and New Zealand and operates under the Ethiopian Synod based in Addis Ababa.

Regular Kidases will be held every Sunday from 7:00 -11:00am. The church also services Christenings, Kurban and various other ceremonies as well as provide bible study every Saturday from 4:00pm for the youth.

Currently there is holy water service given by Melakhe Sebehat Komos Aba Gebriel (መልአከ  ስብሐት  ቆሞስ  አባ  ገብርኤል) for remedy or cure from pain or various illnesses. Typically, the holy water is found in Ethiopia however the gifted can baptise the sick for healing anywhere. A lot of Ethiopian Christians define themselves through the bible, it is a way of life for the Ethiopian faithful as people are dependent on the healing power of their religion which will give them spiritual strength. Worshipers also drink the holy water to get the healing.

Essentially the church provides free counselling to individuals from all walks of life. Generally, the Ethiopian faithful take part in this service, however the priest has advised, it is open for all who believe they can be cured. And sure-enough there have been people travelling form interstate to take part in this opportunity.

The Church is currently under a lease agreement. The main aim is to build a permanent church that will be able to provide ongoing services for generations to come. Participation from Orthodox Tewahedo followers and anyone taking part in any of the services is required in order to make this dream a reality. Donations are welcome and will have an impact collectively.
