Wrongfully Accused Black Student at UC Berkeley

Donation protected
Hello Everyone! I am Aramis Anderson, a current Senior at the University of California Berkeley completing a 5 year program and father of a 1 month old newborn. I am currently seeking monetary support to help with the following fees/services: Legal Counsel, Bail bonds, Redaction and Sealing of Records, and Private Therapy.

**For legal Purposes the following statement will not identify the names of the involved parties. The individual responsible for my Wrongful Arrest will be referred to as: “Party B”. “Party A” was the friend I was helping move out.

Pre-Context: The incident arose due to the major destruction of property, the theft, mistreatment, and misplacement of Party A’s pet.

On Thursday May 27, 2021 I was wrongfully arrested in Oakland California due to FALSE ACCUSATIONS AND STATEMENTS given to police officers after the domestic dispute between Party B and Party A. At the time of the incident, I was the individual deescalating the altercation between the two parties. Party B’s father arrived at the scene. At that time, her father and I had a conversation regarding the reason the incident occurred; we agreed that we would both go assess the damages done to the apartment by his daughter (Party B). After assessing the damages we had arranged that he would be coming back the following day to pay for the damages that was caused by his daughter once he had received his paycheck. The damages were assessed to be roughly around $4-5K. We then had a civil agreement that he would leave his necklace as collateral against the damages done by Party B until the next day (Friday the 28th) in which he would bring the payment.

After Party B father left the premises, Party A called the police to report the destruction of property and the theft of her pet.

The police arrived about two hours after the incident, in which Party A invited them in to assess the damages. However, the police notified us that they were there to detain me for questioning regarding a report by Party B.

During that time of my conversation with Party B’s father, Party B called the police (from within her car) falsifying the statement that she was present within the apartment witnessing her father being robbed with a deadly weapon. Due to the false accusations from Party B, I was wrongfully arrested, placed in the county jail on Thursday night and put on $100,000 bail bond. Even though I was a “first time offender”, I was facing 2 felony charges.

There were a number of factors contributing to my need of posting bail:
  • I was arrested on Thursday, yet the booking was prolonged until Friday.
  •  It was a three-day holiday weekend, which meant I would have had to wait until Tuesday to see a judge as opposed to seeing a judge Friday (the next day) if they would booked me on Thursday when they brought me in.
  • I had no access to my inhaler. Even though I requested one from the medical staff 8 times for the three days I was there. I was also denied the opportunity to have someone bring it.
  • I was threatened by one of the fellow inmates and didn’t want to be put into a position where I needed to defend myself, which would of escalated to more jail time.
  • Due to COVID-19 policies, I would have had to wait until I received a negative COVID test (after being placed with a cell mate) before being able to see a judge. That would have further prolonged my stay until that Wednesday/Thursday (a weeks time in total)
It took me two days to obtain a bail bondsman that would be willing to post bond for me. Following my release, in August of 2021, my legal counsel informed me that the DEA was dropping all charges due to inconclusive evidence and falsified statements.

Since the day of my release, my well-being has been compromised because if this incident. Although being fully exonerated is great news, this disturbing experience has exacerbated my circumstances this experience has put me in compromising positions. I cannot help but continuously reflect on the fact that the day I was booked in the county jail, Friday May 28th, 2021 I missed a paid job opportunity in San Francisco totaling to a missed payment of $1250. The missed payment I’m may, in addition to my savings account being fully exhausted by the financial burden of these large expenses and fees that resulted from this incident has really placed me into financial hardship. As I have mentioned, I am a soon to be father and would love to be able to provide for my daughter not only mentally and emotionally, but financially as well. With that being said, I have been searching for mid/high-level job positions but having to check the “have you been arrested box” has prevented me from participation in the interview process at a number of companies. All in all, this situation has left me mentally, emotionally, and financially challenged. I would love your support helping me tackle these expenses.

Thank you so much! I appreciate your time and support. This has been something that I’ve been contemplating doing for a few months, but have finally got the courage to do. As I’ve become a father and transition in my next phase of life, I would just like to move without this looming over my head. Any level of support is more than appreciated, whether that be monetarily or simply sharing the post. Have a great day and God bless you!
