Safe Home for Family

On New Year's Eve 2018, two years and 26 days ago, I was brutally stabbed multiple times while pregnant with my youngest child of five. This placed an immediate stop to my Nursing studies, which I was currently receiving top grades in. The man who did this to me was my husband, Tariq St Croix, and he was arrested and originally charged with Attempted Murder. This has not been a situation where my identity has been kept confidential, as my name and the story has been in local media. He has since been given a plea deal and with it given a much lesser charge of Aggrevated Assault. He has plead guilty. However, he will be sentenced on February 11, 2021. Crown has informed me that he is a refugee and let me know that his previous promise that he will not see Canadian soil again may not be the reality anymore. That Tariq may or may not be given a Deportation Order, and that there is a high possibility he will see Canadian soil again sooner than expected with nothing but a piece of paper to tell him to stay away from my family and I. His reduced charge will allow him to see Canadian soil again between February 11th of this year and April 30, 2022, as this is the maximum time he can serve with the guilty charge.

My family was placed in numerous shelters and hotels room in the NT and Alberta, where my son with special needs struggled, and where I became very ill from infected stab wounds. We are now living in the home of the stabbing. I go to sleep each night in the same room I was stabbed in and despite my efforts to seek assistance through Housing and Social Services, including applying for a Housing transfer through the Supreme Court, my requests have fallen on deaf ears. I live in a remote northern part of Canada with only one road out and no service from Air Canada.

I live in a small place where everyone knows each other and my location would be difficult to keep a secret. My dream is to raise enough money to relocate my family to a safer place that is not in the Northwest Territories.  I wish to do this without the help of Social Services as I was a former foster child and they have two back to back failing report cards in the NWT. The last time I sought help from them it was highly traumatic and they failed to keep our identity and location safe.

In the past two years, I have had health issues with my kidneys, urology issues including a prolapsed bladder, a large painful breast lump, which was not mastitis and is now gone, breastmilk that stopped flowing from multiple stab wounds to my left breast, and daily chronic pain. There are no definitive answers on my current health status, as COVID has made it difficult to get south for biopsies and tests. As a single mother, I cannot bring my breastfeeding children, nor afford to isolate for 14 days on return, so my hope and dream is to relocate somewhere with more accessible health care for my family in a safe home that doesn't have the trauma attached to it. Thank you for anything you can offer. Merci. Mahsi.
