Save Baxter

It is with great sadness that I share Baxter's story today.  Baxter is my ex-wife's (Dini's) Dog.  I love him to bits!  as well as anyone who comes in contact with him. He is the most incredible, gentle, loving dog you will ever meet.

As you know I babysit Baxter from time to time to help out Dini while she is away. I always look so forward to it. He is my little buddy during that time. She decided to take a trip to Cuba and I was more than happy to take the little guy for the week.

Sunday night I picked up Baxter and he was as happy-go-lucky as can be. Bringing a smile to everyone he came in contact with.

Monday he was fantastic.! We had such a fun time at the park.  He even went into a swing and "Loved it!"

Tuesday he seemed to slow down a bit with the heat, I was not concerned.  The cats were pretty much crashed too. He was coughing a bit but that has been normal for Baxter for a while.

Wednesday morning I noticed Blood on my bed where Baxter sleeps. Then I found a big pool of blood that looked like it was spat up in front of his water bowl.

I rushed him to the Vet and he checked out.  They checked him out thoroughly and he was diagnosed with having a collapsed trachea that was irritated by his coughing and that is where they thought the blood was coming from.   I was sent home with some medications to suppress his coughing to help heal the trachea.

Thursday morning at 4 am I was woken by Baxter continuously coughing on my bed.  I administered some of his cough medicine and that seemed to do the trick and he went back to sleep.

Around 9 am he was back to coughing and started to spit up blood and was breathing heavily.  I called the vet and rushed him in.  As soon as the Vet saw Baxter she rushed him in the back to administer Oxygen. He was pale and could not breathe properly.

He was sent for an x-ray to see what the problem is.  It turns out that his lungs are filled with blood and he is bleeding internally in various parts of his body. The white in the image indicates blood in his lungs.

Baxter needed to go to a larger more equipped facility that could handle his condition. He was transferred to the DMV Veterinary Center in Lachine, QC by ambulance. https://www.centredmv.com/qui-nous-sommes/visite-virtuelle-montreal/   Baxter had to be on oxygen during the 20-minute drive otherwise he would not make it.

At the DMV Center Baxter was diagnosed yesterday with having an autoimmune disease that has rid his body of platelets. Normal is 148 - 484.  Baxter has Zero.  They attempted to add platelets to his blood yesterday and kept him stable on oxygen throughout the night.

He had less than a 50% chance of making it through the night :(

But....He did!! :) . He is a real trooper!!

Baxter is in the best hands possible at the DMV Veterinary Center.  They say Baxter has a very good chance of surviving but needs a series of blood transfusions and more platelets added so he has a chance of living a long and happy life.  This is going to be at least a 7 day process at the vet and 6 months of medication.

Baxter is only 3 years old!  He is not done yet spreading his love and joy to the World.

It may be over $10,000 when it is all said and done.  I am looking for support of $5000.00 to help Baxter get back on his feet and bring smiles to the World again. :)
