On the afternoon of January 10, 2023, while many Santa Barbara county residents were under mandatory evacuation orders, the CHP closed highway 154 to all traffic, isolating residents of the communities near the upper Santa Ynez River. At the same time, dry creek beds in the area became raging debris-filled rivers, rapidly inundating rural roads and driveways. This disastrous mud-flow hit the Adcock's property- from two different directions.
Here's Chris's story (be sure to click READ MORE for the rest of the story & video)-
"We were home enjoying a beautiful, deep rain when Michael went to check my sister’s house next door. In the few minutes he was gone, the water and mud breached the studio bridge and roared down the pathway towards the house, flooding the bedroom and bath with water and mud. Our neighbor Mehosh came down to help and Michael waded into the flow with his chainsaw and cut away a large section of the bridge. This rechanneled the flow away from the house, sparing the rest of the rooms.
Meanwhile, the two culverts up the road from us became blocked by debris, causing the water from the other side of the road to flow down our driveway and join the flood running under the bridge. The result was a thundering river that roared through our yard all night. We lost water and propane when the flooding buried our well and cracked the propane line. The deluge has stopped now, but the yard is a war zone with a 3-4 foot wall of mud and rocks against and under the wall of the shop. At the very least, heavy earth moving equipment is needed to repair the yard and the driveways."
