Hi, my name is Jessi, I am an administrator for MASH-OK (Malamutes and Siberian Huskies of Oklahoma). I created this fundraiser to help Angela Baker & her beautiful husky, Mya. They have been members of MASH-OK since 2018.
Last Wednesday, Mya was rushed to the vet following an episode of dry heaving, collapse, and possible seizure activity. Upon arrival at the vet, a blood draw showed her potassium levels were at a critically high rate & she was transferred to the specialists at Blue Pearl Emergency Vet.
Video of Mya's dry heaving/collapse here (trigger warning: video is somewhat graphic): https://www.youtube.com/shorts/LGHZjlDco90
Blood work & urinalysis were ran and unfortunately yielded no answers; both showed clear, healthy results. Her kidneys were checked and x-rays were taken of her chest, heart & lungs. Tests were run for Addison's disease and whip worms since those could be responsible for a fainting spell, but results were negative for both.
Mya was sent home last Wednesday with a cortisol injection, prilosec, anti-nausea meds and sucralfate. (This visit cost $1062). No official diagnosis was given but it appeared to the vets that Mya had something wrong with her reflex syncope (vasovagal nerve). Mya was put on a medication regiment at 4:30am, 12:30pm, and 8:30pm with instructions to feed at 5:30am and 5:30pm. Per the vet's instructions, if Mya threw up while on these medications, she would need to return to the ER.
Mya was fine on Thursday, but Friday evening she began drooling heavily. Angela called the ER vet and was told to monitor Mya. Saturday afternoon, she began drooling heavily again and this time regurgitated her food and was refusing food/treats. On Sunday 5/28 at 5:26am, Mya threw up again and was rushed back to Blue Pearl. Sunday's visit cost $1182.
She has not been able to eat or keep anything down since Saturday night and was admitted to the ICU on Sunday night. Her bloodwork was all repeated and still no answers. She began having urinary incontinence and urine seeping since being admitted to the ICU. The vets still have not given an official diagnosis for what is going on with Mya. The vets recommended switching Mya to a prescription HA diet to rule out any food allergies. An ultrasound was done which turned up no masses, but did indicate thickening of the small intestine. A diagnosis of gastritis was speculated, but does not explain the dry heaving, collapse or seizure-like activity that she experienced last Wednesday when this all began. Her bill for the first day of ICU care was $3300.
At this time, Mya's bills add up to $5544, not including the cost of the prescription food diet and any additional days in the ICU. She has not been discharged yet. Per the vet's instructions, they will try to feed Mya again today and monitor to make sure she keeps her food down. If she is unable to keep food down, it is likely she will need to stay in the ICU for at least another day. We will update the GoFundMe with more details as they are provided by the vets at Blue Pearl.
Mya is Ang's very best friend - they go everywhere together, from hiking trips to dog-friendly restaurants and everything in between. Angela & Mya are a huge part of the MASH-OK pack. Mya is also well-known throughout the OKC community - on a normal weekend, you might see her running around town wearing her famous dog goggles & tutu. Angela is such a selfless person & always puts others before herself, but it's time for us to give back to her. Please donate whatever you can, no amount is too small.
**UPDATE: Goal has been updated from the original goal of $5600 to $9206. This includes Mya's most recent ICU stay at Blue Pearl ($3606). Mya has been in the ICU 3 times since this GoFundMe was originally created. Her vet bills now total over $10,000. Her next appointment is scheduled for this Friday, 9/1 with Dr. Hodges at Oklahoma Veterinary Specialists in Tulsa, OK. This appointment is for a gastric endoscopy/intestinal biopsy and the estimate for that surgery is between $2600-3400 (this amount has not been factored into the GoFundMe total yet). Please see the updates section for more information on Mya's current condition, or use the contact button to contact me directly with any questions.**
