Please help Mike and Kylie with their Recovery

On November 1st, Mike and Kylie Marxen were involved in a horrendous, life-changing accident

While on a father/daughter outing,  an 18-year old, uninsured driver unexpectedly made an illegal U-turn RIGHT INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC hitting Mike and Kylie's motorcycle - Mike's leg was severed on impact and Kylie sustained severe trauma and blood loss.

We are fundraising on behalf of our good friend and co-worker Trish Marxen who almost lost both her husband and daughter that day.  Thankfully, the quick actions of a highway patrolman in applying tourniquets and the speed of the Life-Flight helicopter crew saved their lives long enough for them to make it to the nearest trauma center.

And that is when the real battle started...

Mike  required an above-knee amputation, had multiple fractures (ribs, sternum, clavicle, spine), and suffered a head injury causing short term memory loss. He has had to endure four surgeries and many complications including a pulmonary embolism in which he almost lost his life for a second time. He remains in the hospital to this day. Thankfully Trish has been allowed to stay by his side night and day to help him through his recovery.

Kylie underwent three operations to repair the damage to her right wrist/hand and to close the wound on her leg. Kylie is an amazingly tough young woman and has already been discharged home from the hospital. She is recovering under the watchful eye of her older brother and aunt. Kylie still needs a wheelchair to get around, and is most likely looking at further reconstructive surgeries but we are hopeful she'll be back to playing volleyball and skateboarding sooner rather than later.

Mike and Kylie ARE insured, but their insurance (through Trish), unfortunately will not cover a lot of the expenses. Trish and I work at a tiny community hospital in Riverside, CA. Our hospital was taken over just last year by a for-profit hospital system. Then in July 2020, our regular insurance was switched over to what's called an exclusive-provider organization (EPO) - meaning that our medical expenses are covered if we stay at our small community hospital or the other small community hospitals owned by the same company. There are NO trauma centers in-network.

The Marxens will have to pay a considerable percentage of the hospital stay, surgeries, rehabilitation, home care, and medical equipment. They have to pay 100% of the Life-Flights for BOTH of them totaling $121, 770 and the bills are already coming in! And on top of all that, Trish will not be receiving any income while out on FMLA to care for both her husband and daughter.

The Marxen family desperately needs your help!

Please consider donating to this fund. Anything you can give - no matter how small - will help. And Please help spread the word by sharing this page.

On behalf of the Marxen family, we would like to Thank You So Much for your prayers and support.  Also, we humbly ask everyone to please respect the Marxen family's privacy during this extremely difficult time.
