On 15th August 2025 our lives changed forever when Joel died just four weeks after a stage 4 cancer diagnosis.

After months of doctors and hospital appointments, struggling with awful pain being blamed on chest infections, pneumonia and gym injuries we found out it was in fact that Joel had cancer in his liver, lungs, spine and pancreas.

At just 46 years old we knew what we were facing and Joel’s bravery will remain in my mind forever-not focusing on himself or his pain and what his fate would be, instead selflessly thinking of me and our boys and our future.

Joel unfortunately didn’t get the chance to undergo any treatment to try and prolong his life or make any more memories with us, it was just too late.

His wish was to die at St Peter and St James’ hospice so the boys and I would have separation from our family home and his death.

The care and compassion he received from the hospice was unbelievable. From the minute we entered the hospice to caring for him after he had died.

Making sure his pain was under control and checking on us all as a family during our week there.

They enabled Joel to have the end of life he wanted and deserved, although far too soon, I will be forever grateful to them all, he was at peace and comfortable when he died, surrounded by love.

I know first hand from working at the hospice in the past how the staff work tirelessly to ensure the patient and families get the support and care they need whilst being treated with dignity and respect.

So on the of 1st August I will be walking from the Jack and Jill windmills to The Chatri and back again, a walk Joel used to enjoy, to raise much needed funds for the hospice.
