My mother was misdiagnosed after 3 attempts at Fairfax hospital ER 2 months ago. She was having chronic cough with Abdominal pain and each time she visited the ER she was send home with cold/Flu diagnosis. She went and saw a GI doctor who recommended Colonoscopy and upper GI Endoscopy but first she was required to obtain a Ct of her Abdomen for evaluation before those tests could be performed. She received an order from the doctor on 12/19/2019 and felt very ill the same night so we took her back to the ER.
The ER was informed of her visit to the GI doctor and them recommending Abdominal Ct first. They did the CT scan and told us she has a lot of fluid buildup in her Abdomen (Ascites) with multiple Tumors all over her Abdomen and one mass on her right Kidney. She was admitted to Fairfax hospital that night and had a Biopsy of the Tumors in her Abdomen by Friday 12/21/19. The doctors aslo decided to drain the fluid and were able to drain 3 liters at the same time. We were told this was possibly cancer but they just wanted to know the type and Origin of it so they could decide on her treatment.
We were told the results would be ready in about 7 days. The wait game began and we were praying these Tumors would be benign.
On Christmas day 12/25/19 at 8:15 am the doctor walked in and said as we assumed it is cancer and GYN origin. They consulted a gyn oncologist who disagreed with the diagnosis and was more concerned about the mass on her Kidney. She wanted the kidney mass to be biopsied. We were told by the medical oncologist they were confident this was GYN origin but they would consult a kidney specialist.
The kidney specialist agreed with the medical oncologist that this was GYN origin based on the pattern of the growth of the Tumors, Biopsy results and my Mom's symptoms they were very confident this was ovarian origin.
My mom had Paracentesis (Fluid draining) 3 times and each time they took more than 3 liters of fluids. In the meantime the medical oncologist was trying to get the ball rolling and get her scheduled for chemotherapy. They decided to start the Chemo on Friday 1/3/2020 but before that they scheduled her for right kidney Biopsy to figure out what was on her before they started Chemo. They next morning right before my mom was scheduled to get her first round of Chemo I received a phone call from her medical oncologist letting me know that they now are diagnosing her with Renal cell carcinoma because she received a call from the pathologist letting her know that the Tumors that were biopsied on 12/21/19 also tested positive for renal cell carcinoma and this was not good because her cancer was advanced. The doctor told me there is no treatment option available at Inova Fairfax hospital because this type of cancer does not respond to chemo and the only hope is Immunotherapy treatment which can't be performed at Fairfax hospital because it is very expensive and they can't allow it.
My mom has lost over 30lbs in the past 2 weeks at the hospital. She is unable to eat, drink, and has no control over her bowel movement. They are now telling us they have to discharge her because there is no other option at this time. My mother walked in to Fairfax hospital and now after 2 weeks of getting poked and tested they want to send her home. I need all the support I can get to help my mother fight this battle. I can't watch my mother die because a whole bunch of money hungry doctors and hospitals are rejecting her because of insurance.
