In 2008 Rayhan was born following an emergency C-section after complications in the womb cut-off oxygen to his brain. He has Cerebral Palsy (CP). This affects his speech, body movement and muscle coordination and means he requires a wheelchair for most of his movements.
He's thrived for 13 years through the support of several medical professionals, therapists, teachers and most importantly, his family, including my sister Shaheen (Rayhan's mother), brother-in-law Ashif (Rayhan's father) and niece Jaya (Rayhan's sister).
There is no cure for CP, rather, it is managed through training and therapy. This has and will be a constant throughout Rayhan's life, including a recent surgery to help straighten his knees and stretch his hamstring muscles, which he faced with his usual positivity and resilience.
But let's face it, a 13 year-old boy will only get heavier and lifting him in and out of their van to take him to appointments is not a long-term solution for Shaheen and Ashif. An accessible van with a ramp for Rayhan's wheelchair would do wonders for their quality of life and ensure Rayhan can continue to flourish by participating in the activities that support his wellbeing - from physiotherapy appointments to attending Friday prayers to watching his sister play soccer.
As Rayhan's proud aunt, I'm inspired to raise CA$40,000 for my 40th birthday year to buy Rayhan an accessible van and I hope you can help me!
In addition and along with my family and friends, I'll also be aiming to walk/run/swim/cycle 40,000km over the year. I will be posting regular progress updates on this page and on social media if you'd like to follow along (@shazar.dhalla)!
