Norman Lloyd Needs Our Help!

Donation protected
This fund is being established for Norman Lloyd with the help of Lowell Bergman (Emeritus UC Berkeley Chair in Investigative Journalism), Dan Noyes (Center for Investigative Reporting), Bob Lorentzen (former CBS News Bureau Chief), and some old friends of Norman.

You may have worked with Norman Lloyd or heard of his legendary thirty-plus years as a cameraman and director of photography for nearly every CBS News program from the Cronkite Era to 60 Minutes. What you may not know is that Norman broke into the network during the Vietnam War risking his life chronicling the lives and deaths on the frontline. While he allowed a vast audience around the world to get a glimpse of the reality of war close-up, Norman paid a terrible toll.

That toll never stopped Norman from being the person you wanted to work and be with. His wisdom in the field, especially when it was risky, was without peer. His dedication to the work, the story, and the collective effort total.

Norman is a hero. In combat in Vietnam and other war zones, he saved countless lives including famously that of the late Ed Bradley in Cambodia. That moment would lead to a lifetime bond.

No surprise, Norman developed serious PTSD. Partly to heal those wounds, he retired twenty years ago. He was determined to revisit his experience in Vietnam and the cache of footage he shot preserved in CBS’ archive. He would explain that his goal was to honor the very young men he befriended, and the many whose deaths he captured on camera!

CBS recognized that what Norman experienced and recorded was priceless. They released the footage he shot decades ago. Much had never been seen by the public. Norman then produced a series of documentaries that in large part he paid for himself.

With that done he turned to supporting his wife, Dongshin, who had dedicated herself to caring for her mother in their home. That work ended a year ago when her mother passed away at 96 after 14 years in their around-the-clock care.

It was at that time that Norman himself faltered. He was having cognitive problems. They increased. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Over the last few months, his symptoms advanced rapidly. Today Norman Lloyd needs full-time care. He could wander off at any time. Dongshin cannot work...

They have a very limited income. Our goal is to raise at least $50K a year for two years, $100k total to be used to provide them with assistance in caring for and monitoring Norman through his fight with Alzheimer's.

If you want to know more about Norman and his work, or about his current situation and his family, please email, text, or call Dongshin Lloyd or contact someone in his support group and one of us will be in touch.

We urge you to contribute whatever you can afford. All donations are greatly appreciated.

We would very much appreciate it if you would leave a comment of support or remembrance and post any photos or videos below for Norman.

Thank you.
