Miki's Bone Marrow Transplant Fund

Hello, My name is Roxane. I am starting this campaign to help my sister and her husband’s friend and Chinese teacher. Madeline lives in Xi’an, China and has been teaching my brother-in-law Mandarin lessons over Skype every day for the last 4 years.
Last year Madeline and her husband Jeremy gave birth to their first child, an adorable baby girl named Miki. To their surprise and horror, Miki was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia during a routine doctor’s visit last December. The doctors in their local hospital offered no treatment options because Miki was too young, being less that 12 months old. They searched for other specialists around China but the consensus was the same. They were devastated and desperate.
My sister, Paige and her husband, Tom live in Australia. They helped fly Madeline and her family out to see them and get a second opinion from the doctors there. Miki’s diagnosis was confirmed but the lack of treatment options were the same, as long as Miki was younger than 12 months, they would not attempt to treat the cancer. By this time she was almost a year old so with blood transfusions keeping her alive, they placed hope on the eventuality of chemotherapy. Treatments were too expensive in Australia so they flew back home and found a great team of doctors at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.
Miki has since received chemotherapy but they eventually learned that her cancer was not responding. The doctors said their last hope would be a bone marrow transplant. Since this video was made they have gone ahead with the transplant as there was no time to waste. Jeremy was the best donor for the job so on September 29th they did the transplant. Since then Miki has been suffering from an intestinal infection but she is strong and still fighting. They have to wait two weeks to see if her body will receive or reject her father’s bone marrow.
Since they started treatments at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center they have exhausted their savings, sold their apartment in Xi’an and their car. This alone will put them back for many years since they don’t earn much money. Madeleine is a Chinese teacher and Jeremy is a young doctor of Chinese medicine in the Tui na department. Needless to say, neither of them have worked for months since they moved to Shanghai and are focused on their daughter’s recovery.
The bone marrow transplant cost them $100,000 USD and their previous unpaid medical bills are already up to $70,000 USD.
The urgency for raising money is upon us. Miki is a strong and willful little girl who has proven to be a tremendous fighter. Madeline and Jeremy have been so strong and courageous and believe that Miki can beat this and live a happy and healthy life. They are desperate to save their baby girl and we would like to help them in any way we can. Helping to pay for their medical bills would lift a massive burden from their already heavy hearts.
If you feel moved, please forward this video to your networks. In China they don’t have access to such powerful social media platforms and this is our best hope to raise money.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for watching Miki’s Awesome Video.
We will keep you informed on Miki’s progress
