Crystal's breast cancer journey

Our dear friend, Crystal Young, was recently diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She just had a double mastectomy as well as 4 lymph nodes in her right axilla removed. Her medical team recommended that she take up to 6 weeks off of work for recovery from this intense surgery. She also will need chemotherapy, radiation and another reconstructive surgery.

Crystal has worked for Marian Hope Center, which is a non-profit children’s therapy center, as a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 20 years. As many of you know, Crystal is not only an amazing therapist, but she pours her heart into each family of the child she works with. She goes above and beyond and loves each and everyone of her clients. She is a dedicated therapist who gives 110% each and every day. Not only have we been blessed to work with Crystal, but we call her our friend.

Since Crystal works for a non-profit organization, her paid time off each year is limited, and she does not have access to short term disability benefits. She has used all of her current paid time off for her initial surgery and many doctors appointments and testing. She will still need more time off for her chemotherapy, radiation and reconstructive surgery, as well as all of the appointments that go along with cancer.

Crystal has a husband, Mike, and two teenage children, Barrett and Maylee. Her family relies on her income to help financially support them. In addition to their standard monthly living expenses, they will now have extra medical bills and additional costs that go along with a cancer diagnosis.
