Hello - we are the Hoffman family, and we are raising funds for Scott's acute nursing care needs.
Scott Hoffman is the oldest of 4 siblings - a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend. He is a nature-loving, science fiction enthusiast, music buff and the best big brother ever. He joined the Navy at age 17 and served four years. Once discharged started his young adult life finishing school, playing guitar and volunteering at the Page Museum in L.A. (the La Brea Tar Pits).
Scott is a loving, kind soul, our big brother, who we love so much. One year after being Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Navy (May 12, 1981), Scott cut his hand and went to a Veteran’s hospital for surgery to repair the tendon. While performing surgery, the doctors made a grave error with the anesthetic, and Scott sustained a traumatic brain injury. This medical error caused a coma, which lasted over seven weeks and left him without the use of his arms and legs, without speech, and without the ability to care for himself in any way.
Scott is now 65 years old. Until recently, the Veterans Administration funded his care (reasonably so, as they caused the injury). However, in early 2021, they stopped his income completely, saying they could no longer pay him disability income until 2027. Since then, we have fought to get these benefits restored, to no avail.
With the help of skilled nurses, our family has cared for Scott for over 40 years. We have depended on that funding for his acute and vital home healthcare needs. He requires 24-hour care: lifting, transferring, feeding, changing, and bathing. Medicare does not cover the type of care he needs, and the nursing homes do not have sufficient equipment or human resources for the kind of attention he requires. Scott’s comfort and health are our focus, especially as he ages and has become so fragile.
The best place for Scott is at home with his loving family - Mom, Harriet, who is 87 years old, and his sister, Kayla. At home is where he is safe and adequately cared for. Also, he can enjoy his books, music, and the company of his loved ones, including his nephew Joseph and other sister, Toni.
As we attempt to resolve issues with the Veterans Administration, Scott's home health care costs come to $9,700 per month. Our goal is to raise funds to cover his expenses for three years.
