My mother has and is going through a tough time. On August 12,2015 she has a ct scan of her abdomen because "it just didn't feel right". After her scan she was called by her PCP and we went into his office approx 1 hr post scan. The words from him "there is a very large mass in your abdomen that appears to start at your ovaries is also involving multiple organs inside your body. I do not know if it is cancer but I need to get you to your GYN." From there we immeditaly when to her GYN and he told us that he was pretty sure it was cancer but couldn't be sure based on the scan, we needed a specialist. The next day we met Dr. Kimball who wanted to do the surgery ASAP and we agreed to go ahead with the surgery without knowing if it was cancer and what type it was. My mother had a five hour surgery on August 21,2015. After the surgery we know that it was cancer and he was able to move most of the mass that was there, it went from 15+ cm down to 2cm in size. Great news right. It seems with cancer there is always bad with the good. Her colon was more involved then expected and there is scattered cancer in the lining protectin the other organs. Also cancer on her stomach. He didn't want to remove her stomach due to quality of life, but if it doesn't respond to chemo we might have to (I will cross that bridge when I have to). So now to Monday August 24, not even 2 weeks from when we had the scan, she is 3 days post op, she is able to get out of bed with help and walk to the restroom. She is on a clear liquid diet and still has a NG tube in place (to give her bowels time to heal and adjust). She is able to control her pain pretty well and not let it stop her. I am amazed and proud to see the fight and strength this woman has and hoping that she can keep it going, its going to be a long road. As some of you might know my father passed away unexpectedly at the age of 49 in 2002. Unfortunatly my parents were not prepared for the death. My mother has had to struggle since that to keep a roof over her and my head at that time and help get me through school. Which she did. She as had other things happen that have hurt her trying to get back on her feet but she was starting to see the "light at the end of the tunnel" as she puts it and then she got a CT scan. She will be in UT hospital for 5-10 days (depending on her digestive system) and out of work for an unknown amount of time. She is somewhat prepared however there is alot of bills, as we all know other than medical that are will need to be paid. I truly feel so akward asking for help (and she dosen't know that I am) but I also know that my parents helped a lot of kids and their families when I was younger ie. starting Lonsdale sports program and paying out of their pocket for most if not all of the kids to participate, helping out at the Baby Faclons before my father became President of Alice Bell Ball Park. That ball park truly made both of my parents so happy. The extended family, happy children and a communty like no other. Thank you for anything that you can offer and understand if you can not. It ask me for a goal and I don't truly have one anything will help.
