Bring Mike Jones Home from Thailand

Donation protected

Friends, family and community,

We ask for your thoughts, prayers and support for Michael Jones in this time of challenge. Mike decided to celebrate his birthday this year by traveling abroad for the first time. He enjoyed a brief visit to Thailand, then prepared to return home to his family. On Monday, December 16, 2019, he arrived at the Suvarnabhumi Airport located in Bangkok, Thailand for his flight back home to the United States. As he proceeded through the airport security check point, Michael was asked to step aside. After some delay, he was told by airport security that he was being detained because one single bullet was found in his carry-on luggage. Michael was stunned and confused by the accusation. MICHAEL WAS NOT TRAVELING WITH ANY GUNS, AMMUNITION OR WEAPONS OF ANY KIND.

Cases such as this are referred to in the news and online as “The Bullet Scam” or “The Bullet-in-Bag Scam”. Targets are accused of carrying one single bullet in their carry-on bag, then detained and delayed. After missing their flight home, victims are advised that this is a serious, punishable offense that will require a local lawyer, fines and jail time. They are reminded that it could take several months to get a trial while they wait in a foreign jail. Targets are then given a second option. That option is to pay a hefty cash fee in order to be released within a week and avoid the process of fighting the charge. This is also known as extortion.

Michael reached out to his family to advise of the delay and terrifying circumstances. Michael’s family contacted the U.S. Embassy. A female officer at the airport police station warned Michael not to involve the Embassy or tell any officials what was being offered. Once the Embassy became involved Michael was told he would have to stay and fight the charges.

At this time, Michael has had to come up with over $12,000 just to bond out of jail and hire a lawyer. The next court appearance is scheduled for some time in March. His passport is being held by Thai authorities since he cannot leave Thailand until the matter is resolved. He will be unable to return home for Christmas, New Years, nor his son’s 16th birthday in January. Although his employer has been fully supportive and is able to secure his position at work, Michael is prevented from earning income until this is resolved. He is the primary supporter of his household.  In addition to working over 40 hours each week, Mike is also a student and will be unable to continue with classes at this time.

We are in need of help while we are waiting on a resolution. We anticipate additional legal fees,
lodging costs while in Thailand, another fare home eventually, and must continue to pay the bills at home until he returns. We set our goal at about half of our expected expenses.

Although the situation is incredibly unfair and horrifying for Michael and his family, he has maintained an admirably positive attitude. He is determined to get home soon to continue to take care of his family who misses him sorely.

Please share the story and be aware of scams such as these when you or your loved ones are traveling abroad. Please consider reaching out to your local representatives as well to see what you can do to help prevent emotionally and financially devastating crimes against travelers.
