I'm a disabled writer who's about to eat a $4,000 surgical bill. It's a surgical bill for my jaw, though, so I expect it to be the only thing I'll be able to eat for a little while.

 

Actually I got two surgeries coming up. The big one replaces my jaw with titanium, that one's covered 'cause it's critical enough. But it turns out that there's an optional extra surgery I want to do first - a luxury surgery, if you will - that would minimize the risks. Turns out the risk is my entire jaw could shatter like porcelain going through temperature shock.

 

'Cause that's a luxury, I got to go out of pocket with it. And disabled writers have notoriously empty pockets.
