Rescued Senior Dog Needs Surgery

HOW I FOUND HAPPY DOG I found "Happy" with no ID and in an unloved looking condition on Friday afternoon by Seaside McDonalds/Home Depot. Vet estimates his age is 12-14. The old fellow was meandering around the drive thru traffic and half a dozen strangers passed him by. I overheard one woman ask an employee to call animal control. No one would mistake this pup for a spring chicken, and I didn't think he'd stand a chance in a shelter or left near the busy roads. So I plucked up the 39lb loaf and took him home, hoping to find his owner ASAP. After an active few days, we've had no luck. THE NEED FOR HAPPYS NEW SMILE: I went to Banfield vet today. Bloodwork is great. However, this old pup has STAGE 4 periodontal dental disease. I wanted to cry when the vet showed me the state of his back teeth. It explained the nauseating doggy breath we had noticed, and why even when hungry he refuses dry or hard foods and is never tempted by a doggy biscuit. We are going to schedule 1-2 surgeries and the old boy will be placed on antibiotics both before and after for the infection in his gums and for healing up after surgery. We are starting him on antibiotics and ear drops for his current ear infection today. The estimated surgical cost is $1000 for the first visit, which will include a cleaning and anasthesia.HOW TO HELP: A handful on kind souls in the community have offered to chip in to offset Happy's vet bills and give the old guy the gift of happier doggy golden years. I am overwhelmed even by the offer. Thank you everyone for the advice, encouragements, and human kindness. Other notes... Glucose a little high 177 (normal range ends at 144) Mass on his belly is a fatty depositGot rabies vaccination, Received an ear cleaning, Diagnosed with an ear infection and prescribed ear drops. He has a spot of skin cancer on his belly that will be removedEDIT: I know this dog must have come from somewhere, I am still searching for his past owners. However, after noting the poor condition of his teeth and how dirty he was I really do hope to keep him as a new part of the family, and give him a home with a lot of love.
