Can you help Me Get Back on the Road

My name is Brett Wyatt, and I am a young man living with a spinal cord injury in Moora, Western Australia.

I am reaching out to seek support in raising funds to purchase a van that can be specially modified to allow me to drive independently from my electric wheelchair.

Being able to drive again would mean far more to me than simply regaining the ability to travel. It would restore a significant part of my life — my independence and freedom.

For most people, getting into a car and driving wherever they need to go is something taken for granted. For me, it would represent a major step forward in rebuilding my independence.

I have already begun working towards regaining my driver’s licence. I have been completing driving lessons in a specially modified van through Freedom Motors, and I have approximately six lessons remaining before I can be assessed for my licence.

Unfortunately, I have recently been advised that I am unable to continue my lessons in their vehicle, as I have become accustomed to its specific setup. The controls and configuration in my own vehicle will differ, meaning I need to complete my remaining training in the vehicle I will ultimately be driving.

The vehicle I am currently seeking is a new Hyundai Staria, priced at approximately $60,000. I believe this vehicle will provide me with the best opportunity to regain my independence and return to driving.

For NDIS funding to cover the required modifications, the vehicle must be less than eight years old and have fewer than 80,000 kilometres. Purchasing a new vehicle ensures these requirements are met and provides me with a reliable option that I can use for many years.

Once the vehicle is secured, it will need to be sent to Freedom Motors for the necessary modifications. Due to current demand, there is a waiting list, which may result in a delay of up to a year before I can resume my driving lessons.

While this is a significant wait, I remain committed to continuing forward.

I have already come a long way, and I am determined not to give up at this stage.

Having a modified vehicle and obtaining my licence would open up many opportunities for me. It would allow me to travel independently, visit family and friends, attend appointments, and have greater control over my daily life. It would also enable me to continue pursuing my passion for drone photography, which provides me with purpose, creativity, and a way to capture the world from a perspective I deeply value.

I understand that many people are facing financial challenges, and I am sincerely grateful for any consideration or support.
