Daniel wants to walk again
Hi, i'm Daniel and i asking for your help to be able to continue with my rehabilitation therapies.
Me.
In 2011, i was 19 years old and i was studying the second semester of Gastronomy. My dream was: "To become a great Chef and have my own restaurant."
On September 6th of the same year, my dream was truncated by criminals who fired their guns indiscriminately in the place where i was sharing an ice cream with my girlfriend.
A projectile injured my spinal cord at the level of the fourth cervical vertebra, C4.
The diagnosis: quadriplegia. Which is a total paralysis from the neck down and it It requires the patient to receive mechanical ventilation for life, this means a ventilator is needed in order to be able to breathe by assisting inhalation of oxygen into the lungs and the exhalation of carbon dioxide.
Despite the worst prognoses of neurosurgeons and thanks God, the spinal cord injury was not complete; shortly after the incident, i was showing some symptoms that contradicted in many aspects the medical diagnoses.
My family and i got our hopes up appreciating those small signs of recovery as well as the fact that my cognitive fraction- Cerebral and mental performance- was unharmed.
Healing process
Over the course of 5 years and with a few and poor therapies granted from my health insurance, we were forced to look for alternative options (reflexology, equinotherapy, acupuncture, pilates, etc.), all this paid by my father.
New hopes.
Almost 2 years ago we got to know the clinic of the University of La Sabana (https://www.clinicaunisabana.edu.co/ ), located in a city near the capital. They are the founders of an outsdanding rehabilitation program which covers various disciplines such as phonoaudiology, psychopedagogy, physiotherapy, electrotherapy, occupational therapy, mechanotherapy, psychology, psychiatry.
It was what i and my family were waiting for!.
Despite requesting this treatment from my health insurance, it was necessary to file a lawsuit and only then was authorized to initiate the rehabilitation program for 10 months of intensive therapies at the clinic. It all begun on the 6th of june 2017 and ended this past March 31st, 2018.
My father gave up his job. The most important thing for him is that i can achieve the greatest possible recovery.
In these 10 months my father spent the money that he received when he retired from his job and a few savings he had. Money is almost finished since we had to pay rent, daily transportation to the clinic (we do not have a car), food, toiletries, clothing, among others.
More advances.
Skepticism on the part of the medical, physical and therapeutic staff of the clinic was general. The type and timing of the injury, did not play in my favour.
However, against all odds, i has been improving little by little, disconcerting doctors and therapists.
In these 10 months, i has achieved diverse progress.
The most important. I began to perform small marches - 10 to 15 meters - with an axillary walker. Then i went to the normal walker, being able to walk holding the device. The displacements also increased between 30 and 40 meters. And in the last days in the clinic i was walking without needing to hold the device, and could extend the distance traveled to 70 meters.

These progresses are what convinces us that I can improve my walk and even, with the help of a walker or a cane, i will be able to walk again. We are clear that it is difficult to achieve progress in other aspects of my condition, but we do have faith that my quality of life would improve if i manages to walk even if it is short.
A new expectation.
There is another institution in the capital that has very good professional quality and excellent robotic technology, MOBILITY GROUP (www.mobilitygroup.co/2017/). An evaluation done by them previously, determined that initially it would take between 6 and 8 months of treatment. The monthly cost is about $ 3,500, and housing, food and transportation expenses should also be considered. This would increase the monthly spend to more or less 4,500 dollars.
It is this other and final hope that leads us to ask for the valuable help of those who read these notes. Dreams are built up little by little. No matter how much you can donate, from the bottom i appreciate any gesture of help so that i can walk again and therefore have a better quality of life.
I hope we can collect the money soon and thus start as soon as possible with these therapies.

Hola, yo soy Daniel y estoy solicitando su ayuda para continuar con mis terapias de rehabilitación.
Este soy yo.
En el año 2011, yo tenía 19 años y estaba cursando el segundo semestre de Gastronomía. Mi sueño era: “convertirme en un gran Chef y tener mi propio restaurante”.
El 6 de septiembre de ese año, mi sueño se vio truncado por unos criminales que dispararon indiscriminadamente en el sitio donde me compartía un helado con mi novia.
Un proyectil lesionó mi médula espinal a nivel de la cuarta vértebra cervical, la C4.
El diagnóstico: cuadriplejia, o sea, una parálisis total del cuello para abajo y necesidad de por vida de ventilación mecánica, es decir, una máquina para poder respirar.
A pesar de los pésimos pronósticos de los neurocirujanos y a que gracias a Dios, la lesión de mi médula no fue completa; fui mostrando algunos síntomas que contradecían en muchos aspectos los dictámenes médicos.
Fueron esos pequeños signos de recuperación y que su parte cognitiva estaba intacta, los que nos dieron, a mi y a mi familia, una gran esperanza.
Recuperación
A lo largo de 5 años y con unas pocas y pobres terapias otorgadas de parte de mi seguro médico, nos vimos en la necesidad de buscar otras opciones (reflexología, equinoterapia, acupuntura, pilates, etc.), que pagaba mi papá con su salario.
Nuevas esperanzas
Hace casi 2 años tuvimos conocimiento de la clínica de la Universidad de la Sabana (https://www.clinicaunisabana.edu.co/), ubicada en una ciudad cercana a la capital. Allí se realiza un programa de rehabilitación muy completo que abarca diversas disciplinas como la fonoaudiología, sicopedagogía, fisioterapia, electroterapia, terapia ocupacional, mecanoterapia, sicología, siquiatría.
Era la opción que estábamos esperando.
A pesar de solicitarle a mi seguro médico este tratamiento, fue necesario interponer una demanda legal y sólo así se pudo lograr que me aprobaran 10 meses de terapias intensivas en dicha clínica, que empezaron el 6 de junio del 2017 y terminaron el pasado 31 de marzo del 2018.
Mi padre renunció a su empleo. Lo más importante para él es que yo pueda lograr la mayor recuperación posible.
En esos 10 meses de terapia en la clínica, el dinero que recibió al retirarse de su empleo y unos pocos ahorros que tenía, están casi terminados. Tuvimos que pagar un apartamento en arriendo, transporte diario a la clínica (no tenemos automóvil), alimentación, aseo, vestuario.
Más avances
El escepticismo por parte del personal médico, fisiátrico y terapéutico de la clínica, fue general. El tipo y el tiempo de la lesión, no jugaban a mi favor.
Sin embargo y contra todo pronóstico, fui mejorando poco a poco, desconcertando a médicos y terapeutas.
En esos 10 meses, conseguí diversos progresos en mi condición.
El más importante. Empecé a realizar pequeñas marchas - 10 a 15 metros - con un caminador axilar. Luego pasé al caminador normal, pudiendo caminar sosteniéndomen el aparato. También aumenté entre 30 ó 40 metros los desplazamientos. Y en los últimos días en la clínica ya estaba caminando sin necesidad que me sostuvieran el aparato, pudiendo extender a 70 metros la distancia recorrida.

Son éstos progresos logrados lo que nos tienen convencidos que puedo perfeccionar mi marcha y que, así sea con la ayuda de un caminador o un bastón, voy a poder volver a caminar. Tenemos claro que es difícil conseguir progresos en otros aspectos de mi condición, pero si tenemos fe en que mi calidad de vida mejoraría notablemente si lograse caminar aunque sean tramos cortos.
Una nueva expectativa
Hay otra institución en la capital que posee muy buena calidad profesional y excelente tecnología robótica, MOBILITY GROUP (http://www.mobilitygroup.co/). Una evaluación realizada por ellos anteriormente, determinó que inicialmente se necesitarían entre 6 y 8 meses de tratamiento. El costo mensual es de unos 3.500 dólares y habría que considerar también los gastos de vivienda, alimentación y transporte. Esto nos incrementaría el gasto mensual a más o menos 4.500 dólares.
Es esta otra y definitiva esperanza la que nos lleva a pedir la valiosa ayuda de quien lee estas notas. Los sueños se construyen poco a poco. No importa la cantidad que usted pueda donar, de corazón agradecemos cualquier gesto de ayuda para que yo pueda volver a caminar y por lo tanto tener una mejor calidad de vida.
Esperamos poder recolectar el dinero pronto y así empezar lo mas rápido posible con estas terapias.
