The Simple Things - Stationary for Students

Donation protected
I am very privileged to be leading a school in remote West New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea.  Whilst my  school has good resources and support, the surrounding schools are not so lucky.  Many of the schools are over-crowded, the teachers often receive little or no pay and there are few if any resources.

I recently visited a little school to donate furniture - there were 90 students in the school and two out of the three classrooms had no furniture at all.  The children shared broken slates to write on and the teachers wrote on the bare board walls with chalk.  The only resources the teachers had were a few old posters on the wall.

We carried our desks and chairs in and set them up - it seemed the whole community had gathered at the windows to witness the arrival of furniture for their students.  The look on the children's faces when they sat at a desk for the first time was absolutely priceless.

It got me to thinking about how I could help in a real, material way.  My plan is to buy stationary in Australia and bring it over here to distribute.  I have access to shipping from Brisbane, directly to Bialla.  I will be going out into different schools in the area with my team of teachers each term.  We will run professional development for the teachers (something they have never really had - many of them are not trained and, as I mentioned, not paid).  We will distribute the stationary as we move around the schools and my plan is to return to these schools every year.

This is the starting point for my project to make a difference for these children.  There are many other projects to take up.... but stationary is something we can do right now.

So for now I am asking, if you feel you can donate, any amount would be really appreciated.  My undertaking is that all funds raised will be used to get stationary (I will be chasing some companies in Australia to see the best possible price I can get.... if you have any contacts please let me know).  I will be distributing the stationary directly into schools and will be providing professional development and support for the teachers.

If you know of any organisations or schools who would like to help or get involved in some other way, please send me a message.

Education is highly valued by children and their families here - and sometimes just so hard to access.  Your help can really make a difference.

At the moment I am just asking for financial donations; in the coming months I will also be offering some of my beautiful hand-crafted blankets and fair-isle hand-knitted hats for sale, with all funds going towards this project.  I will provide further details about this a  bit later on.

The little school I visited had just two toilets for 90 students.... that is something else to think about in the future.  If you have any ideas for ways to support some bigger projects like providing better facilities - please contact me directly.

Thank you in advance, any amount you are able to contribute will make a difference.
