Your Contribution Can Make a Difference
Six years ago, Susan's life took an unexpected turn. On August 6, 2018, she underwent a routine operation but collapsed four days later due to severe sepsis from a perforated colon. Three surgeries in two days left her with an ostomy and a wound vac.
Susan stayed in the ICU for seven weeks, being treated for sepsis and contracting antibiotic-resistant pneumonia and C-dif. Doctors tried various medications until her infectious disease specialist found a successful treatment. She also had three stomach abscesses that required regular draining. Nerve damage from leg wounds caused permanent loss of feeling and function in her toes and part of her leg, making it impossible for her to stand or walk. Susan was on a ventilator three times and had a feeding tube. Her organ failure began with her kidneys, necessitating dialysis for several weeks until they regained function.
After spending seven weeks in the ICU, she was transferred to various long-term, short-term, and rehabilitation hospitals for three months. During this time, she endeavored to re-learn how to walk and stand while also recovering from a chronic surgical wound and nerve damage in her feet and legs. She returned home in February of 2019. Despite the extensive therapy and rehabilitation efforts, Susan remained unable to stand and walk.
Susan's mobility is restricted to a wheelchair. Although numerous challenges arise from living with this constraint, transportation represents the greatest difficulty for her. Transportation requires specially modified vehicles to accommodate her wheelchair. While many transportation services are available, their cost is prohibitive. The expense of an accessible vehicle is substantial, and despite diligent saving and seeking financial assistance, Susan finds herself still far from reaching the required amount. Consequently, she is appealing to the community and the generosity of individuals to help bridge this financial gap. Your contribution, regardless of size, can collectively make a significant impact and assist her in achieving this goal.
We are seeking assistance to raise funds for the purchase of a vehicle, which will enable Susan to attend her medical appointments and procedures. Additionally, this vehicle would allow her to participate in everyday activities that many take for granted, such as dining at a restaurant or engaging in any outings. Susan has been unable to attend numerous family events with her mother, siblings, and nieces and nephews due to her current circumstances.
Thank you for reading Susan’s story and contributing to her cause.
