Lindsey’s Story
On November 11th, 2023, Billy and Terri Wilson received a phone call that no parent would ever want to receive. Their 22-year-old daughter, Lindsey was the passenger in a near fatal car accident. Lindsey’s injuries are quite extensive and included broken ribs, facial fractures but most significantly, Lindsey suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) with an unknown prognosis on her long-term recovery. Lindsey had to have a portion of her skull removed and will wear a helmet until they can hopefully reattach the skull or create a prosthetic. She is still incurring fluid on her brain which the medical team is closely monitoring. Lindsey spent 4 weeks in ICU and recently was transferred to The Shepard Center in Atlanta where her progress has been slow but steady. She is having to relearn all the simple things we take for granted every day like walking, eating and communicating.
Unfortunately, on December 12th Lindsey started having trouble breathing and it was determined the best course of action would be to surgically re-install a trach again. What should have been a 30-minute surgery took 4 hours due to complications.
While we are optimistic for Lindsey’s future, TBI’s are a long and arduous recovery. Physically her bones are healing but Lindsey is still experiencing confusion and cognitive challenges. Her long-term prognosis is still unknown but we know she is getting the best care possible. What should’ve been a happy day of Christmas shopping has now changed her course of life permanently.
Billy & Terri's Story
While any family would struggle with dealing with the trauma of an accident of this magnitude, the Wilson’s have a bit more on their plate than the average family. In February of 2019, after raising their own three daughters, Billy and Terri opened their home to their 4 great-nieces and nephews. At the time they were 3 months, 2, 3, and 5. This was assumed to be a temporary custody situation to keep the kids together and avoid foster care. It is now almost 5 years later and they are still raising the children as their own with full custody of them. Since this was a voluntary placement, they receive no financial support and have assumed that responsibility themselves.
Billy and Terri are the most selfless people I have ever met. The sacrifices they make daily are noble. They are also the humblest people you will ever meet. Unfortunately, the toll of being at the hospital daily, commuting expenses, and supporting their beautiful young family is nearly impossible when you need to be with your daughter and cannot work. Billy tried to return to work this week but unfortunately, he had to leave when Lindsey started having breathing issues.
This fundraiser is to help Billy, Terri and Lindsey be supported financially during Lindsey’s long road of recovery. If you can help support them, please know it is going to amazing people that have sacrificed for others their whole life.
Billy and Terri have been best friends of ours for over 25 years. We have vacationed together, spent holidays together, and raised our children together. When I tell you they are amazing people, it’s a complete understatement. I am in awe of them daily in their strength, willingness to help others and most importantly, their faith in God who we know has a plan for Lindsey!
If you can support them in any way, we so greatly appreciate it. All proceeds will go to Billy and Terri to support them in their immediate time of need and Lindsey in her long-term recovery!
