I pray the old adage holds true that “the third time is the charm”…
Gaby was recently accepted by Cedars Sinai into their heart transplant program for a third heart transplant which will require a permanent relocation to Los Angeles on Monday, January 13.
This is bittersweet news for our family, as the acceptance gives Gaby the opportunity to receive a new heart in order to live a full life but also requires that she move from her family in Houston and be separated from us for the first time.
The move to Los Angeles will result in increased “out-of-network” medical expenses for our family. Cedars Siani is located in Beverly Hills and Gaby must live in close proximity to the medical center, which also means increased living costs and the need for Gaby to set up an apartment on her own. Michael, Gaby’s boyfriend, will put his career as a High School teacher on hold in Houston and make the move with Gaby and serve as her caretaker. Edgar and I are grateful for Michael’s sacrifice and are excited for them to take this next step together. Edgar and I will remain in Houston for work and to allow Isa and Aidan to finish high school here.
Over the past five years, I have been continuously encouraged by family and friends to set up a GoFundMe for Gaby to help with ever-growing medical and living expenses. I have always declined, not wanting to impose upon others for support. Throughout this journey, I have learned so much, not the least of which is to ask for help when it’s needed. I have decided now is that time.
We are all so thankful for the support that we have received from our friends and family. It is the support that surrounds us that has made this journey bearable.
