This is an emergency request for support for urgent needs of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area immigrant families, many of whom are experiencing extreme hardship due to the Covid-10 pandemic and related unemployment; food and rent insecurity; health issues; etc. We are already aware of pending malnutrition issues, risks of eviction, etc., in our area as a result of unemployment and lack of access to most federal and state assistance programs. We have raised our goal for funding to $62,000 from the previously raised $12,000, due to the extensive needs of the immigrant community and their unique vulnerability.
Many immigrant families will not qualify for relief under the CARES Act passed by the Senate. For citizens and social security card holders, individual adults will receive $1,200 each and $500 per child, up to $3,400 total. In contrast, immigrant families will not receive these relief payments, even U.S. citizen spouses and children whose working head of household pays payroll taxes and federal income taxes through the IRS' Individual Taxpayer Identification Number program.
A number of area residents have already pledged their relief payments from the Treasury to the 3R Fund and will be advancing their expected amounts to us. If you can afford to consider doing that or some portion - either now, in advance, given the urgent need; or in several weeks - you will be making a major difference in the lives of some very good people and their children. Your contribution will allow volunteers to provide immediate assistance - on the spot - to families who need that help today, not tomorrow.
The 3R Fund for Immigrants is a KY-registered nonprofit formed in 2018 to provide funds to immigrants and their families in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky who have been detained by immigration authorities. The primary purpose was to help families finance bonds and attorney costs to defend their loved ones under US law. A secondary purpose was to provide intermittent aid to families related to these issues. These purposes are now being flipped out of urgent necessity. As a result of this immediate crisis, the 3R Fund will focused primarily on relief efforts going forward, for people fall who fall through the cracks of local government agencies and non-profits, and now and not later (or not at all).
The 3R Fund for Immigrant Family Legal Defense of Cincinnati/NKY, Inc., is a registered Kentucky nonprofit corporation. It is not an IRS 501(c)3 organization and thus cannot offer tax deductibility for donations.
The Fund is managed by a board of directors including Don Sherman, civil rights director for LULAC-Cincinnati and retired attorney; Nancy Sullivan, executive director of Transformations-CDC in Price Hill (OH); Sister Alice Gerdeman, former executive director of the Intercommunity Justice & Peace Center (Cincinnati) and provincial superior, Sisters of Divine Providence in Melbourne, KY; and Jeff Richardson, a former senior vice president with Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati and founding board member of Esperanza Latino Center in Covington, KY. Each has substantial connections to the immigrant community in the area and is widely known among statewide advocates for immigrants.
