On March 10, 2019,  three days after Antonio completed his 1st high school basketball season he complained of a severe headache and was taken to the ER. Based on the results of his CT scan Antonio was rushed to Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ.  There he was diagnosed with a brain tumor the  size of a golf ball and started to bleed out. Due to its rapid growth and extreme brain pressure. Antonio had to have emergency surgery on March 11,2019 to remove the brain tumor. Antonio’s tumor was malignant and the type of cancer is embryonal with a rare subtype.  Approximately one month after the removal of the tumor while in rehab Antonio began to complain about headaches again and was rushed from the rehab facility back to the hospital. That’s when we found out the tumor had returned. Antonio was given 3 days of emergency radiation therapy and Chemo.  

Antonio is currently receiving proton therapy which is a special type of radiation which uses a beam to irradiate diseased tissue. He is also receiving light Chemo treatments and will have extensive chemo treatment approximately one month after radiation.

Antonio’s tumor was growing in the left frontal lobe, which affected his speech and right side movement. He is currently recovering with rehab at Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick. He has had several set backs but he is continuing to fight! He tells us daily basketball is his life and he is fighting to get back on the court.
