This gofundme is for the loss of my Dad - a father, a son, a brother, a veteran, a mentor, a best friend, and more.
I am his daughter Brianna Ureño , and this is the reason for his gofundme:
Earlier this year, towards the end of July, my dad noticed that he was developing a fever and a rash, and starting to feel weakness in his muscles, as well as respiratory issues. He worked through this sickness until August 16th, when he took himself to a clinic in Chino, where he was told he had Pneumonia. He was prescribed with medications, and then proceeded with work.
Up until one evening in September, he felt he couldn't work any longer, and was taken to the Loma Linda V. A. Hospital by his mom and fiancé, and was admitted that same night. He spent a weeks time there, till was then told he was diagnosed with Dermatomyositis (or DM). It is a rare inflammatory disease in the autoimmune disease family, marked by muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash. There is no found cause for this disease; it has no cure, and can only be treated with steroids and immunosuppressive drugs, along with an active change of lifestyle. He was discharged the following day, and was given various medications, including steroids called Dapsone and Prednisone, along with supplements to counteract the deficiencies the steroids take, creams for his rash, along with an inhaler.
Just two weeks later, on October 2, he was admitted back into the V.A. Hospital due to an aggressive reaction of psychosis from the steroids. There, his medications, body and health were being carefully monitored daily, fed three times a day, and was being checked by his team of doctors every day. Unfortunately, his sickness was rapidly progressing, and his lungs were the main target. Three weeks after, he was transferred to the MICU due to increasing complications, and just a day later, he was intubated. By this time, his disease had advanced to Interstitial Lung Disease, ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome), which then led up to Pulmonary Fibrosis.
For 5 weeks, my dad's team of doctors - Rheumatologist, Pulmonologist, and Primary Care Providers - and nurses, worked together incredibly hard, to treat my dad and us, the family, with the upmost care and respect for our wishes. They helped keep my dad stable as they began multiple treatments, in hopes to see improvement in his oxygen levels. While doing so, his doctors were reaching out to their colleagues, and other well-known lung specialist in the state - around the country - and even presented my dad's case in a conference amongst other Pulmonologists in the Loma Linda and Riverside hospitals, to inquire second opinions as to what more can possibly be done with my dad's condition. Unfortunately, with the minimal amount of data there is in the world of this disease, there was not much that could be done. But nevertheless, his doctors tried their absolute best, and still came back with some hope for treatment. However, the outcome did not measure up. My dad's heart stopped on November 30th, 2018 at 8:18 am.
My dad put up one of the greatest fights he ever could of his life. He surpassed the expectancy of anyone with his similar condition. He surprised many, the strength he was capable of. As he did all his life, he made a name for himself - and he made everyone proud.
For God is our greatest physician, who planned out the best scenario for my dad, took matters in His own Hands, and healed my dad the Best possible way - for there was nothing here on earth that could have healed him better. And for that, we are so blessed to know that my dad, Jaime Ureño Figueroa, is finally at peace - and won his battle.
So for this GoFundMe, is to honor my dad for everything he's done, for every person he loved, and knew, or didn't know. For he was a giver, who never thought twice about it - always insisted, and would never expect anything in return. He had a smile that was bigger than the moon, and brighter than the stars; a charisma that would leave people in awe; he was always so well put-together; whatever he put his mind to, he would do it; if he said he was going to do something, or be somewhere, rest assured he would do it, or was there. He was the hardest working man, I knew. Who always made sure that his loved ones received the very best of the best, directly from his heart and soul - so he deserves to go out with the very best of the best, too.
The Department of Veteran Affairs benevolently administers a portion of the essentials on their behalf; however, a substantial amount greatly depends on the family. These final expenses ALL go towards my dad's funeral use. We the Ureño family are asking kindly for your generosity that will go towards his casket and mortuary expenses. And if any is left over, I promise, to split the proceeds and have them donated to a charitable Veterans organization, such as the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, and the American Lung Association in hopes that it will contribute to furthering their research on improving lung health and preventing lung disease.
It's an incredibly sad effort trying to gather and plan these expenses, and extremely tough reaching our hands out for assistance; however, we are hoping that you may contribute what you can in supporting to celebrate my dad's life and give our final good-byes. We appreciate any amount of gift, and it will all go towards the goodness of my dad's expense. We thank you so very much, on behalf of myself and the Ureño family. God Bless.
