Hey everybody! My name is Candace Rembert. I’m a classically trained musician from Detroit, living and working in New York as a freelance violinist and elementary school teacher in Brooklyn public schools. It has always been my passion to make music and share it with people, especially in the black community.
Recently, a student asked me, “Why do we have to take violin class? It’s for white people.” I paused before asking her, “Who told you that?” When she responded, “I don’t know, I just have never seen black people play violin is all,” I was more inspired and motivated than ever to push myself to break the idea that there is such thing as a “white” profession.
I have been fortunate enough to play a violin that I have owned since its birth in 2006. It is wonderful violin and has taken me through high school all the way through graduate school and around the world. But I can only push the sound so far. Now that I am applying for Doctoral programs, I need a more mature and advanced instrument that I can grow with on this new journey. I have recently fallen in love with a violin made in 1795 London. Her richness and power is incredible! With this amazing violin, I truly feel that I will be able to showcase my potential and I cannot wait to share it with all of you. But I need your help to make this vision come to life. Please consider donating to my campaign so that I may continue to elevate my musical career and continue to add color in classical music.
