I decided to create this Gofund account to help my brother and his family while they go through the trial that they will be facing for the next 6 months (if everything goes well).
My brother Andrei is a self-employed. He does construction/remodel for the living but due to very unexpected medical condition he will have to undergo a complicated surgery (discectomy) on his spine to replace C2,C3,C4,C5 and C6 disks. - “Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion is a surgical procedure to treat nerve root or spinal cord compression by decompressing the spinal cord and nerve roots of the cervical spine with a discectomy, followed by the inter-vertebral fusion to stabilize the corresponding vertebrae”.
For about 2 years he noticed that he could not keep the balance with closed eyes when he is standing, but for over a year he started feeling numbness on his right side of the body. Strength in his arms and legs is being lost. He started seeing massage therapist and for a short period of time he saw the improvement but not for too long. Finally on June 24, 2019 he was forced to see a neurologist due to severe numbness all over the body, hard to keep balance and nerve pain. Andrei wanted to postpone the surgery to a later time but on September 24th he had a follow up appointment where doctor informed him that he is at a high risk to be paralyzed and the surgery needs to be done ASAP.
Andrei is the self breadwinner in his family. His wife and him have 3 children: 7, 5 and 3.5 years old that will have to meet their needs. While having some savings saved it will not be enough to last through the time of the recovery. The recovery was projected to be 3 months but it was extended to 6 months at his last check up appointment. He is very worried for the fact that he will not be able to work for this period and bring the food to the table.
For good spine fusion he will not be able to lift anything heavier then a gallon of milk. If he doesn't follow the proper recovery fusion will fail and internal bleeding will accrue therefore failed recovery.
During the healing process, the vertebrae grow together, creating a solid piece of bone. This halts motion between the problem vertebrae, creating stability in the neck. Cervical fusion is used to treat cervical fractures, dislocations and other pathologies. It is also used to correct deformities in the neck.
The surgery is schedule for October 2nd, 2019
