EMANCIPATION DAY

Freedom march Vancouver - EMANCIPATION DAY

We are the Black freedom society; uniting with allies to fight for freedom, we breathe new life into an ongoing struggle. We
breathe for those who have already taken their last breath and use our voices to shout for lasting change in this unjust society.
We believe that humanity should not be distinguished by race, color, creed or gender. All people were created
equal. We champion Equality and seek to see all individuals treated with the same consideration. In looking back on history, we aim to shed light on the injustices that BIPOC have suffered
as individuals, and as a worldwide community. It is only in honouring the struggles of the past that we can heal and create a brighter future.

In light of the recent killings of many innocent black men and women by the police world wide, we as activists can not keep quiet and turn a blind eye. Which is why we have decided to March once again.  The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 ended slavery in the British Empire on 1 August 1834, and thus also in Canada. However, the first colony in the British Empire to have anti-slavery legislation was Upper Canada, now Ontario. John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada (1791–1796), passed an Act Against Slavery in 1793, which ended the importation of slaves in Upper Canada and manumitted the future children of female slaves at age twenty-five. Unfortunately, it did not free a single slave.[5] It was superseded by the Slavery Abolition Act 1833.

While the date of the First August Monday holiday in Canada is historically linked to the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1834, not all of provinces commemorate the holiday as such.

The province of Ontario is the first province in Canada to dedicated August 1st as Emancipation Day in 2008. Shamika and I got the province to proclaim August 1st as emancipation day just in time for our march. We are now the second providence in Canada to declare August 1st as emancipation day. So we are very proud of that accomplishment. We march to: fight for the voiceless, and use our voices to invoke change. We are expecting 20k+ to attend our march and demonstration. As you can imagine, creating something of this capacity requires a lot of time and money; as we need to execute things properly and safely. We have received a lot of support from our community and allies but we still need more to cover the cost of:

Transportation

Rental fees

Barricades/fences

Merchandise for attendees

Print material

Legal fees if need be

And other costs associated with the event planning

This movement matters to us because total freedom for all means empowering all members of society to thrive. We will highlight Black businesses to build collective wealth in our community and shed light on economics. We believe that we can all thrive together peacefully and harmoniously. But it starts with YOU!
