Barrett family support

If you know Leah, Bob or Ben, you likely have a special place in your heart for them. They are currently in need of some help due to some unfortunate events that took place last spring.

In October of 2022, Leah was in a car accident. In an effort to avoid surgery, she went through multiple injections to help with the pain. Ultimately, Leah had to have surgery in March of 2023. The surgery was expected to fix her back problems by means of a multi-level discectomy and laminectomy. Her surgical pre-consultation indicated that she would have surgery on a Thursday, and be walking out of the hospital on Friday.

The surgery was unsusccessful as it had caused more damage and needed to be corrected the following day. The second surgery proved that there was extensive nerve damage, and resulted in total immobility and loss of feeling in Leah's right leg.

After 5-days in the hospital and no improvement, Leah was transferred to an inpatient rehab center. She was there for almost an entire month before she was discharged, wheelchair-bound, and instructed to maintain 'first floor' living.

Bob and Ben had to rush to make the house adaptable for her to be able to get around. This included building a wheelchair ramp and working on plans to eventually install a shower on the first floor.

Leah was fortunate that her parents were able to stay with her, as she is unable to be left alone during the day, but they were unable to continue a longer stay. Bob has now taken off work for a few months to be Leah's caregiver as she gains her strength and ability back in her right leg. Once Bob returns to work, she will likely need in-home care services.

Currently, the Barrett's are living off a very limited income and still have their regular bills to pay in addition to extensive medical/hospital bills and necessary home and vehicle adjustments. Insurance has proven difficult in allowing some of the necessary items for Leah to navigate comfortably around the house.
