Here is his brief bio prepared by our sister Monica Mam.
Born July 16, 1963 in Oxford, Ohio, Sophana Jr. was the first son of Sophana Mam Sr. and Valerie Mam. After years of struggling with bipolar Phana’s life ended March 12, 2017, Sunday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio..
A couple years after his birth the family moved to Cambodia, his father’s home country. At the close of the war, Sophana moved to Singapore with his father, stepmother, sisters Margo and Miko while his mother and older sister move to live in the US.
In Singapore, Sophana graduated from Nama Sekolah Secondary School in 1981 and joined the Singapore Air Force a year later.
After finishing his term in the air force Sophana moved back to the Unites States and reunited with his mother and siblings. He met Lan Hien in Columbus, Ohio and got married October 5, 1998. They have two sons, Sophana “Mickey” III and Tommy. They continued to live in Columbus.
From a very young age, Sophana had a passion for aviation and dreamed of becoming a pilot. However, his dream vanished when he found out that he had to wear eye glasses. But in spite of his disappointment, he resigned himself to become a ground service mechanic in the air force. In time, his passion turned to a hobby of building and flying model airplanes and helping others who had the same interest.
